CureFest: Friends and family organize fundraiser to raise money for brain cancer research
Colby, Phil and Misty Baumann encourage the community to come on out for CureFest July 28 benefiting brain cancer research. The event was organized after Phil was diagnosed with brain cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.

They hoped for two days that the headaches Atascocita resident Phil Baumann was experiencing was related to a tooth infection.
For Phil, his wife, Misty and their son, Colby; it was a surprise for them when Phil was diagnosed with an incurable form of brain cancer, Glioblastoma Multiforme in September 2011.
Doctors were able to remove the first tumor and underwent radiation and chemotherapy. Because of the form of brain cancer, the tumors have a history of reoccurrence so doctors are treating Phil?s new tumor with a special trial treatment.
?I had terrible headaches. They were the worse when I would take up; I was taking pain relievers all day long. At first, we thought it was sinus or a tooth infection. It was when the doctor came in with the film and said, ?I think it might be cancer,? when it set in,? Phil said.
After they learned another tumor had appeared in March, the family went on a special trip to Hawaii since they had never been before.
It was all due to Phil?s diagnosis and meeting with other patients at M.D. Anderson where the Baumanns realized they could do more.
The idea for the first CureFest was developed and it has grown tremendously to include a bevy of silent auction items and numerous musical acts including Sundance Head, Wendy Taylor and Javier Colon from NBC?s television show, ?The Voice? July 28 at the Humble Civic Center.
?I am blessed. I have a great family and a very supportive groups of friends who have helped CureFest to grow exponentially. We are blown away,? Phil said.
Misty has developed a website for the event and flyers which have been passed out to businesses around the community as a way to spread the message about CureFest and to also help raise money for brain cancer research.
Phil was one of the last brain cancer patients to be selected for the genetic drug trial which is like a virus that targets the tumor and works to shrink the tumor. But there were other patients who were not accepted or could not go through the trial but through raising money with CureFest they hope there will be more funding for research and coming closer to finding a cure.
According to information about the event, it was through developing close friendships with many people suffering from brain and other cancers including 25 year old Caleb Kidd who was also receiving treatment for a GBM spurred the family to work towards funding research for this underfunded disease. Brain cancer is the most underfunded cancer and has begun to effect larger numbers and younger patients.
?We have had friends who have asked us what they can we do and we laughed and said a cure. With CureFest, we can raise money to help research and help others who have brain cancer. Of course, I want to save my husband but I want to save others we have met during this process,? Misty said.
They continue to have businesses in the community donate items for their silent auction such as autographed jerseys, trips, gift certificates and numerous other items.
A special early visit from Santa Claus will join the various activities happening throughout the day. They will also have food, refreshments and a car and bike show for all of the hobbyists in the community.
?We are beyond excited. We encourage everyone to donate to brain cancer research and join us for CureFest. Also, we hope for CureFest to become an annual event and expand even more,? Misty added.
CureFest is July 28 from 12 p.m. until 11 p.m. at the Humble Civic Center Arena.

China-Made U.S. Olympic Uniforms Cause Controversy
NEW YORK ? The U.S. uniforms for the opening ceremonies at the 2012 Olympics games are causing a firestorm. It?s not the colors or style that?s has some up in arms. It?s where the clothes were made.
?I am so upset that I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves,? said? Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
The uniforms designed by Ralph Lauren include blazers, trousers and a French-style beret in red, white and blue. But it?s not the designer?s style that has left many angered. It?s that the uniforms were made in china.
A number of lawmakers are pointing fingers at the Olympic committee?s decision to manufacture the wardrobes overseas while the American textile industry struggles and many workers are desperate for jobs.
?You think they would know better,? said Speaker of the House John Boehner.
Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi echoed the same sentiments.
?They should be wearing uniforms that are made in America,? she said.
In the wake of the controversy, the U.S. olympic committee has released a statement defending Ralph Lauren. It reads in part: ?All this talk about Olympic uniforms made in China is nonsense. Polo RL is an American company that supports American athletes?
But the sentiment is not enough to calm Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
?I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again,? he said. ?If they have to wear nothing but a singlet that says USA on it, painted by hand, that is what they should wear.?
Ralph Lauren also is dressing the paralympic teams for the closing ceremony and providing casual clothes to be worn around the Olympic village.? The company has declined to comment on the criticism.
