Michelle Obama challenges kids with lunch contest

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Children from across the nation will rub elbows with Michelle Obama and dine off fine china in the East Room of the White House this summer as part of a contest to promote healthy eating.

The first lady is asking children ages 8 to 12 and their parents to create nutritious lunch recipes that represent each of the food groups for "The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge."

Winners will travel to Washington to sample some of the original dishes at the second White House kids' "state dinner" luncheon this summer.

The deadline to submit recipes is May 12. Last year's challenge received more than 1,200 entries.

The contest, created by Epicurious.com, is a partnership among the food website, Mrs. Obama and the departments of Education and Agriculture.

The Shroud of Turin - the cloth that some have claimed was used to wrap the body of Jesus after his crucifixion - is the subject of a new book that claims it is 2,300 years old. Gayle King reports.

The linen cloth, allegedly the burial shroud of Jesus, was closely examined in 1988 in laboratories in Switzerland, England and the United States using carbon-14 dating techniques, the?Telegraph?reports.

Those examinations of the shroud ? which bears the image of a man's face and torso ? dated the cloth from 1260 to 1390, supporting claims that it's merely an elaborate medieval hoax, as Jesus' life is thought to have come to an end in A.D. 33.

Some believers, however, insisted that the linen fibers used in the 1988 examinations were not from the original shroud, but rather from a portion of the cloth that had been repaired after suffering fire damage in the Middle Ages.

Now, scientists at the University of Padua in Italy have used infrared light and spectroscopy (the study of a physical object's interaction with electromagnetic radiation) to examine the shroud and found that it's actually much older, the Telegraph reports.?

In his recent book, "Il Mistero della Sindone," translated as "The Mystery of the Shroud," (Rizzoli, 2013), Giulio Fanti, a professor of mechanical engineering at Padua University, said his analysis proves the shroud dates from 280 B.C. to A.D. 220 ? meaning it existed during Jesus' lifetime, the?Guardian?reports. The Shroud of Turin is said to be the cloth that covered Jesus' body after the crucifiction. Previous examinations that dated the shroud to the Middle Ages mesh with historical records, which don't start mentioning the cloth until that time. But some researchers believe the shroud is older. Thomas de Wesselow, author of "The Sign: The Shroud of Turin and the Secret of the Resurrection" (Dutton Adult, 2012), argues that medieval artists did not paint in photorealistic style, and that a forged shroud created in the Middle Ages would be an anachronism.?

That doesn't mean the shroud is evidence of a miracle, however, de Wesselow told LiveScience last year. He believes natural chemical reactions caused by a decomposing body and annoiting oils could have created the body imprint on the shroud, which may have then been?used as evidence of Christ's resurrection.?

For the first time in 30 years, the shroud will be shown on television this Saturday (March 30), the Guardian reports. Before leaving the papacy,?Benedict XVI?approved a special broadcast of the shroud to be held at the Turin Cathedral, where the cloth is preserved in a climate-controlled case.

And for those who want an even more intimate examination of the cloth, a new mobile app, Shroud 2.0, was just released on Good Friday (March 29),?Zenit.org?reports.

Designed in collaboration with the Museum of the Holy Shroud and the Archdiocese of Turin, Shroud 2.0 synthesizes 1,649 high-definition photographs into a single 12-billion-pixel image. An Android version is also being developed, Zenit reports.

FIFA picks GoalControl goal-line tech system

GENEVA (AP) - FIFA opted for GoalControl on Tuesday as its goal-line technology system for the Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The German camera-based, ball-tracking system was the last of four contenders to win a FIFA contract that starts with the Confederations Cup in June.

FIFA chose GoalControl-4D over three rival projects: GoalRef and Cairos, which both use magnetic fields; and Hawk-Eye, another camera system. It's already used in tennis and cricket, and its English parent company was bought by World Cup sponsor Sony Corp. before it began FIFA-endorsed testing in 2011.

GoalControl was licensed by FIFA only one month ago, and owner Dirk Broichhausen told The Associated Press then that its simplicity was key.

"Our innovation, and also a difference looking to other competitors, is that we can use standard goals, balls and nets. There is no modification necessary," Broichhausen said.

GoalControl uses 14 high-speed cameras - seven trained on each goalmouth - and passed FIFA-approved tests in February in German stadiums in Duesseldorf and Gelsenkirchen. All four systems met FIFA's demand that a signal is transmitted to the referee's watch within one second if a goal should be awarded.

"We want to offer tournament organizers and leagues and clubs not to have to change anything on the pitch. The investment in the technology is enough," Broichhausen said

He estimated that GoalControl will cost $260,000 per stadium to install, and $3,900 per match to operate.

FIFA said the cost of installation - at six scheduled Confederations Cup stadiums and 12 for the World Cup - was considered.

"The respective bids were also judged on cost and project management factors such as staffing and time schedules for installation," soccer's governing body said in a statement.

FIFA's contract with GoalControl for the World Cup can be reviewed if there are problems at the 16-match Confederations Cup - or before.

"The use of GoalControl-4D in Brazil is subject to a final installation test at each stadium where the system will be installed," FIFA said.

FIFA, through its rule-making panel known as IFAB, approved goal-line technology last July, when Hawk-Eye and GoalRef passed the rigorous testing process. Those systems were tested at the Club World Cup in Japan last December, before Cairos and GoalControl had even been licensed.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter wanted goal-line technology in Brazil after England midfielder Frank Lampard had a goal disallowed against Germany at the 2010 World Cup.

FIFA withdrew previous opposition to publicizing goal-line rulings.

Now, competition organizers can choose whether decisions are shown to fans on big screens in stadiums and television viewers. In tennis and cricket, anticipation of a decision provided by Hawk-Eye has become part of the experience.

"It's not secret," Blatter said after the IFAB meeting in Edinburgh, Scotland. "Once we have the technology and it shows it's a goal or not a goal, we have to be transparent, otherwise there's no need to do it."

Referees still have the final say on awarding a goal, or even using goal-line technology when it is installed. Mandatory pre-game tests give match officials the option to switch off the technology if they doubt its accuracy that day.

Hawk-Eye, GoalRef and Cairos will try to persuade other soccer clients, such as the English Premier League or German's Bundesliga, to choose their systems before next season begins in August.

Moors Sports Club beat Panadura Sports Club by seven runs in a thrilling, final-round match of the Premier League tournament. The win put Moors at the top of Group A and helped them book a place in next weekend's final.

Moors, who were placed second before this match, needed an outright victory over leaders Panadura to secure a final berth. Panadura won the toss and put the opposition into bat on a result-oriented pitch. Moors were dismissed for 240, thanks largely to a five-wicket haul by Gayan Sirisoma. Panadura, though, were skittled for exactly half that score in their first innings as Malinda Pushpakumara took 7 for 56, dismissing five of the top six batsmen. Sirisoma grabbed another five wickets in the second innings as Moors fell for 130 with none of their batsmen crossing an individual score of 20. That collapse gave Panadura a second chance, but they fell eight runs short of a target of 251, in spite of contributions from Chamara Silva, Prasanna Jayawardene and Dinesh Ranga Cooray. The last-wicket pair of Sirisoma and Sujeewa de Silva added 23 runs together before de Silva was given out lbw, ending Panadura's season.

In Group B, a run fest helped Sinhala Sports Club (SSC) keep Tamil Union at bay as they qualified for the final, which will be played on their home ground. SSC captain Thilina Kandamby's unbeaten 340, which broke the Sri Lankan first-class record for the highest individual score set by Kusal Perera two weeks ago, was the standout performance of the round.

A Tamil Union bowling attack, that featured Chanaka Welegedera, Suranga Lakmal and Rangana Herath, failed to prevent SSC from scoring a massive 787 for 8, nullifying Tamil Union's chances of an outright win. Dimuth Karunaratne was the first of three centurions, hitting 115 off 170 balls, after his opening partner fell for a four-ball duck. Kaushal Silva made 180 at No. 4. Kandamby arrived after Karunaratne's dismissal, with the score at 241 for 3, and put on 195 with Silva. He later shared a 226-run partnership with Upul Bandara for the seventh wicket, before eventually declaring the innings at stumps on the second day. Needing almost 800 to get the first-innings points they needed to displace SSC, Tamil Union had little to play for on the final day and were all out for 314. Kaushal Lokuarachchi was the highest wicket-taker for SSC, picking 4 for 136.

Air Force Sports Club and Burgher Recreation Club competed in what was effectively a relegation battle amid some controversy. The pitch prepared for the match was deemed unsuitable and the teams played on a different surface, which only allowed for a two-day match. The difference between the two teams was 1.7 points, with Air Force on 51.6 and Burgher on 49.9, but Air Force managed to secure first-innings points by gaining a lead of 29 runs to help seal their place in the Premier League. Opener Thuppahi Nadeera scored an unbeaten 105 in the first innings for Air Force and guided his side to 244, with little support from his teammates. Left-arm spinner Akila Isanka then took 5 for 90 as Burgher were dismissed for 215. With only two days of play possible, the match ended in a draw.

Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club defeated bottom-placed Kurunegala Youth by six wickets. Navy needed an innings victory to stay in the first-class competition and, their six-wicket victory wasn't enough to take them past Badureliya Cricket Club in the points table. Navy made 369 in the first innings, with Chanaka Ruwansiri making 122. Although they dismissed Kurunegala Youth for 212 and 182, they still had to bat in the fourth innings to chase a target of 26.

Three left-arm spinners topped the list of wicket-takers this season. Moors' Pushpakumara took 64 wickets, ahead of Panadura's Sirisoma and Colombo Cricket Club's Dinouk Hettiarachchi, who both took 58. No bowler with more than 30 wickets had a better average or strike rate than 19-year-old offspinner Tharindu Kaushal who finished with 50 wickets in spite of playing fewer matches than the table leaders due to his national commitments. Sachithra Senanayake, who led the table before he left for national duty, finished with 49 scalps.

Among the batsmen, SSC's wicketkeeper Kaushal Silva scored the most runs, hitting four hundreds and two fifties to pile up 814 runs. Former Test opener Malinda Warnapura made 804 runs while Air Force's 20-year-old batsman Yashodha Lanka made 802. The best average however, belonged to Kusal Perera who scored 695 runs at an average of 115.83 in four fewer matches than the table leaders.

The end of the season also sees six teams - three lowest-ranked teams from each group - culled from the top competition. These teams will move down to form an emerging league, which begins next year. The matches in the league will be treated as club matches. After the final round, Burgher Recreation Club, Lankan Cricket Club and Saracens Sports Club were relegated from Group A, while from Group B, Navy Sports Club, Galle Cricket Club and Kurunegala Youth Cricket Club will not play first-class cricket in 2014. The relegations are part of a three-year plan to halve the number of clubs playing in the top three-day tournament, in order to improve the quality of the first-class competition.

A sizable majority of office workers in Taiwan?are interested in starting their own business, with roughly a quarter of those showing interest having already gone some way toward achieving that goal, a jobs bank survey revealed yesterday.

The survey, by 1111 Job Bank, showed that 83 per cent of polled office workers expressed interest in starting a business of their own, while roughly 25 per cent of this group have already put their ideas into action.

The top three sectors for which people were most interested in starting a business were the restaurant trade, retail and wholesale, and clothing shops. The survey also found that those who wished to start a business were on average aged 30.

Compared to last year?s survey, 1111 noted that there has been a 10-per cent growth in the number of people who have put their business ideas into action, while 77 per cent of those who expressed interest in starting a business said they were motivated by the improving economic conditions.

1111 Deputy General Manager Henry Ho said, ?This shows that now may be the right time to begin one?s business, since the economic signs are pretty good in Taiwan.?

According to the survey, 22.62 per cent of respondents expected an income of more than NT$100,000 (US$3,291.61)?monthly once they started their business and 21.43 per cent expected a monthly income of NT$40,000-50,000. The average income for a starting business owner is NT$72,002 per month, according to 1111.

The survey showed that 22.42 per cent of those who run a business use the Internet as their sales platform, while 29.71 per cent run brick-and-mortar businesses.

Ho noted that not everyone has the capability or personality to be their own boss. ?I suggest people to do some personality tests before they actually try to achieve their dreams.?

Many people began business management ?training? as early as college, Ho said, perhaps doing small business at night markets or on the Internet. ?And not only that,? Ho added, ?They have been doing a lot of research on market trends while building up their financial management abilities, which is relevant if you want to succeed.?

Male clothing designer APO, who now has his own brand and clothing shop, said his business revenues reach more than NT$2,000,000 each month. APO started a small online business where he focused on purchasing and selling Japanese clothing. Later he began marketing his own brand clothing.

Ho explained that because most young college graduates are determined to leave their ?22k fate??- a general policy of an NT$22,000 salary base for current college graduates ? many choose to start up their own business in hopes for a higher income. Ho reminded people that as many products reach market saturation, the challenge of successfully running one?s own business becomes more difficult.

Nearly 1,200 cancer patients given diluted chemo drugs | CTV News

Nearly 1,200 cancer patients in Ontario and New Brunswick have been given lower than intended doses of certain chemotherapy drugs, health care officials announced Tuesday.

In Ontario, 990 patients at four hospitals -- London Health Sciences Centre, Windsor Regional Hospital, Peterborough Regional Health Centre and Lakeridge Health in Oshawa -- received diluted chemo drugs.

Saint John Regional Hospital in New Brunswick also said Tuesday that it?s in the process of notifying 186 cancer patients who were given diluted medication.

The drugs in question are cyclophosphamide and gemcitabine. Batches of them were watered down anywhere between three and 20 per cent.

They were purchased by the hospitals from the same supplier, Marchese Health Care, who is responsible for mixing and labeling the drug bags.

The premixed bags contained too much saline solution, which diluted the drug dosage given to each patient, according to an explanatory note posted on Windsor Regional Hospital?s website.

The mistake was caught last week by a pharmacy technician in Peterborough, Ont. The diluted chemo treatments had unknowingly been administered for more than a year in London and Windsor, Ont.

In a news release, Cancer Care Ontario said the affected hospitals are ?working closely with the supplier in order to find out the cause of the error.?

Marchese Health Care defended itself in a statement Tuesday, saying: ?Our preliminary investigation of this issue leads us to be confident that we have met the quality specifications of the contract we are honoured to have been awarded."

The majority of the patients affected were in southwestern Ontario ? 665 who were treated in London since March 1, 2012 and 290 who were treated in Windsor since Feb. 24, 2012.

An additional 34 patients treated at the Oshawa hospital since March 12 of this year were given lower drug dosages and one patient in Peterborough was affected last month.

When the hospitals were notified of the problem, they immediately removed the affected chemo drugs and notified the manufacturer, Cancer Care Ontario said.

?Each hospital has secured appropriate supplies of the medications for all subsequent treatments. Patients' treatment cycles will not be interrupted during this transition,? the agency said.

Dr. Carol Sawka, vice-president of clinical programs and quality initiatives at Cancer Care Ontario, said in a statement that ?chemotherapy preparation and delivery is a complex process and as a result of this complexity, there are sources for potential error.?

CCO said the effects of the diluted chemo treatments are patient-specific and is encouraging those affected to discuss the situation with their oncologists.

But experts believe the watered-down drugs will likely have little to no impact on treatment outcomes because the dosage reductions were relatively small when taken as part of a chemo drug cocktail. ??

"The concern about lower doses is that that over time it may produce an inferior outcome?.but the evidence that links lower doses to inferior outcome are pretty sparse,? said Sawka.

The affected hospitals are now in the process of notifying patients and scheduling meetings with their doctors.

Neil Johnson, vice-president of cancer care at London Health Sciences, said errors in mixing chemotherapy drugs are ?very rare.?

?It is very uncommon?I have long history of being a pharmacist and a health care administrator and I?ve never seen a case like this,? he told CTV London.

Windsor Regional CEO David Musyj told CTVNews.ca that the hospital never had a problem with the drug supplier before.

He declined to name the supplier, saying the company had threatened legal action if they were named publicly after news of the diluted drugs broke. A ministry of health official told CTV Toronto that Marchese was the supplier.

What are cyclophosphamide and gemcitabine?

Cyclophosphamide is used to treat breast cancer and lymphoma, among other types of cancers. It?s also used on patients battling certain types of leukemia, myeloma and non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma.

According to a letter sent to affected cancer patients in Windsor, cyclophosphamide is combined with other cancer medications to increase their effectiveness and is not considered to be the most important part of a chemo treatment.

Gemcitabine is used to treat pancreatic, breast, ovarian and lung cancers. It can also be used for treatments of other cancers.?
