Former catcher and current St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is in the news for his opinion on catchers blocking home plate, and generally when an article begins with a sentence like "former player and current manager so-and-so is in the news for his opinion about an aspect of the sport he played and works in," it's because he wishes something about his current job was more like it was back in his day. Not so this time: On Tuesday he voiced his recent conversion to the idea that collisions at home plate, between runners trying to score and the catchers trying to stop them, should be banned.

NKorea leader, Dennis Rodman watch basketball game

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A delegation spokesman says former NBA star Dennis Rodman met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang, telling him, "You have a friend for life."

VICE spokesman Alex Detrick told The Associated Press late Thursday that Kim joined Rodman in watching an exhibition basketball game in the North Korean capital earlier in the evening.

Rodman, three Harlem Globetrotters and a VICE television crew are in Pyongyang to shoot a documentary about North Korea for HBO.

PFT: NFL to set 2013 salary cap at $123 million

NFL.com has published detailed profiles of almost all of the players who attended this year?s Scouting Combine, and all of those profiles include a section titled ?NFL comparison,? which names the current NFL player who is the most similar to that particular draft prospect. There?s nothing unusual about that.

But here?s what is a little odd: For all four of the white wide receivers that NFL.com profiled, the ?NFL comparison? is another white wide receiver.

I noticed that after I wrote about Texas A&M wide receiver Ryan Swope saying that people are surprised that he?s a white guy who can run a 4.3-second 40-yard dash. When I wrote that, I mentioned that NFL.com seemed to be falling into the usual stereotypes about white receivers, describing Swope as a hard worker with good hands who lacks straight-line speed, while saying the NFL player most similar to Swope is another white guy, Jordan Shipley.

After I wrote about Swope, I got a call from NFL.com Senior Editor Andy Fenelon. He was not happy. Fenelon lectured me about how unfair I was, demanded that I explain myself to him, and informed me that he stands by what NFL.com published.

I didn?t much care for Fenelon?s approach (he apparently never heard the old saw about attracting more flies with honey than vinegar), but I decided to take a closer look at the wide receiver evaluations at NFL.com and see whether I had unfairly represented the way the league?s official site evaluates white wide receivers.

And after taking that closer look, I don?t think I was unfair at all. White receivers are, in fact, exclusively compared to other white receivers. (Read the profiles of Swope and the other white wide receivers, Brandon Kaufman, T.J. Moe and Conner Vernon and see for yourself.) White receivers are praised by NFL.com for their good hands and their toughness, but downgraded for their speed. All four profiles demonstrate the stereotypes we?ve all heard about white receivers a million times.

I mention this not because I think anyone involved in compiling the NFL.com profiles is racist (I don?t) but because I think it?s important for all of us to challenge the stereotypes that we all encounter every day. At NFL.com, the stereotypes about white wide receivers are prevalent. Whether NFL.com wants to admit that or not.

Changemaker Campus event: Communities and the Big Society ...

As part of the Changemaker Campus launch, the University of Northampton will be hosting two public lectures on the subject of communities and the big society.

Featuring Professor Margaret Ledwith as guest speaker, the lectures will give students and members of the local community a chance to hear about radical community development and change.

Professor Margaret Ledwith is Emeritus Professor of Community Development and Social Justice at the University of Cumbria.??She has worked with communities in Scotland and in North West England , and spent time in Nicaragua, in inner-city Manchester, in Hattersley (a Manchester peripheral estate), and with Vietnamese refugees. These experiences have sharpened her understanding of power and oppression. Professor Ledwith's commitment to a more fair, just and equal world gives authenticity to her ideas on social justice and environmental sustainability , and she is a prolific author; she is currently writing Community Development in Action, a handbook for busy grassroots practitioners.

The first lecture, 'Reclaiming the radical agenda: Paulo Freire in a double dip downturn' takes place between 6-8pm on 5 March in the Dialogue Cafe, situated in Park Library. This event is open to both community practitioners within the local area and students from the School of Health. As a Dialogue Cafe event, our international partners will also be able to take part in the event.

The second lecture is entitled 'Community development and human flourishing: be the change!'. This event is open to students from the School of Health, and will take place between 9am - 11am on 6 March at Sunley Conference Centre.

UK 'using less petrol but more gas'

Households have cut back on vehicle fuel over the past decade, but not on household gas, according to an analysis by the Office for National Statistics.

The figures were released to coincide with next week?s Climate Week, the UK?s biggest climate change campaign.

But the statistics offer little cheer to a government trying to persuade its citizens to burn less fuel.

The recession and high fuel prices are demonstrably changing behaviour more than concerns about the environment.

On motoring, the increased efficiency of new cars to meet EU targets has helped to cut carbon emissions.

The Office for National Statistics says changes to road tax pegged to CO2 have also influenced consumers? decisions on the use of fuel and greener, more efficient cars.

But it is the downturn that has really kept people out of their cars ? we are buying 18% less fuel than 10 years ago.

In aviation: there?s a similar picture. The slump has deterred people from flying. But the figures suggest that people still want to fly more - and flying over the 10 years is up 13% overall.

In the home, even the economic climate has not affected our wish to keep on the central heating rather than don another sweater.

Thanks partly to colder winters, gas consumption actually went by 7%, despite the soaring price of gas.

The figures suggest that use of fuel in cars and planes will bounce back with the economy.

That is bad news for a government that it struggling to build more power stations too.
