For a holiday meal with all the trimmings, fresh-baked bread and rolls beat store-bought every time. Yet who can find time for all that mixing and kneading and baking amid all the shopping and wrapping and decking the halls? Therein lies the appeal of a bread maker: Just feed it a few ingredients and press start. Unfortunately this is one of those fancy gadgets that can easily cost a couple of hundred dollars and wind up forgotten in the back of a cabinet. But depending on what kind of bread you typically buy, the machine may pay for itself with regular use. A loaf of homemade bread doesn?t cost much more than the flour, salt, and yeast that go into it, plus a pinch of time and a dash of electricity. And that?s not to mention taste or nutrition.

• The Hamilton Beach HomeBaker 29881 (starting at $50) appeals to beginners with easy operation and reliable results, according to online reviews. It makes 1.5- or 2-pound loaves and has 12 settings, including cycles for gluten-free bread and jam. Greek PM pledges first glimmer of recovery in 2013

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece's prime minister on Tuesday promised an austerity-weary nation that 2013 will bring the first signs of economic recovery after a punishing five-year recession, and held out hope that pending tax reforms will reduce the burden on lower earners.

Antonis Samaras said last week's new debt relief deal with international creditors ? on whose loans the country has depended for more than two years ? has "finally" killed fears that Greece could be forced to abandon the club of European nations that share the euro currency.

To secure two bailouts and the new debt concessions from its European partners and the International Monetary Fund, Greece imposed drastic spending cuts and tax increases that slashed incomes and contributed to an economic output slump of more than 20 percent. Health, education and welfare funds were slashed, and unemployment has reached 25 percent.

"2013 is a turning point," Samaras told a business conference in Athens. "For the first time we will see signs of recovery."

The government has said it expects a return to growth in 2014.

Samaras said last week's deal with creditors in Brussels, which hinges on a ?10 billion ($13 billion) debt buyback drive this week, affords Greece "a single chance ... which we must not squander ? because it will be the last."

Samaras denied press reports his three-party coalition is planning to slap a 45 percent income tax rate on people earning more than ?25,000 ($32,000) a year, saying a draft of new tax legislation would lower the burden on that income bracket and pledging a gradual reduction in rates as deficit-cutting measures take effect.

Finance Ministry figures released Tuesday said Greece has achieved a primary surplus ? which excludes spending on debt servicing ? of ?2.3 billion ($3 billion) in the first 10 months of 2012, compared to a ?4.2 billion ($5.5 billion) shortfall a year ago.

Speaking earlier at the same conference, the leader of the left-wing anti-bailout party that is leading opinion polls called for a delay in the repayment of the country's rescue loans until the recession is over.

Alexis Tsipras, who heads the main opposition Radical Left Coalition Party, argued that the austerity policies pursued by Samaras' government would continue to weaken Greece's economy and leave the country ever-more reliant on emergency loans.

"What we ask for is time," Tsipras said. "We ask for a suspension ? a moratorium ? of servicing the debt until the country returns to a course of growth, so that we can mobilize resources, restart the economy, and bring growth."

Tsipras said the new terms set out by the IMF and its 16 euro partners fell short of a viable solution.

"Unfortunately, they have postponed reaching a lasting settlement for the country's debt and crisis," he said. "This will only extend the uncertainty."

The 38-year-old Tsipras saw a five-fold increase in popular support for his party between general elections in 2009 and June 2012 as he campaigned by attacking Greece's political establishment and economic austerity.

The conservative-led government says his policies are populist and unrealistic and would see Greece default on its debt and leave the eurozone.

Tsipras, who has led opinion polls for about three months, insisted that his party ? an often-squabbling alliance of a dozen small left-wing groups ? is ready to govern.

"Our program is based on the intention to renegotiate the (bailout) agreement with our partners ? not to repeat the causes of the crisis but to deal with them," he said.

Fal'Cie - The Fal'Cie are powerful, magical beings, who created a world capable of pleasing the humans, as they hoped to please their maker. They were responsible for almost all of the operational functions of Cocoon, from power supplies, to food growth, along with the necessary measures to keep Cocoon falling under gravity back to Gran Pulse. They are believed to have been created by the Fal'Cie Lindzei, charged with the task of protecting the mortal world, and finding the gateway between the mortal world and the unseen. The Fal'Cie Barthandelus concluded that the gateway (Etro's Gate), would be opened by flooding it with lost souls, and so planned to destroy Cocoon, open the doorway, and so appease his makers, Lindzei and Bhunivelze. It is uncertain whether any other Fal'Cie had drawn the same conclusion.

L'Cie - Despite the Fal'Cie's great power, they lack the innovation, determination and willpower necessary to perform some tasks... and so they brand servants - humans often with no intention to do their bidding, and charge them with a Focus - that must be completed. These humans are referred to as l'Cie, and possess magical powered granted to them by their Fal'Cie master. A l'Cie is recognised by a marking on their body, which changes over time, reflecting how long they have left to complete their focus. A l'Cie who completes their focus is gifted with eternity, put into a crystal sleep until either they are needed again, or awoken by the gods themselves, whereupon they maintain their magical abilities. A l'Cie who fails to complete their focus, becomes a Cie'th.

Cie'th - Often, a l'Cie's focus can be vague, and they fail to carry out their purpose in time. Their body becomes twisted and deformed, covered with blackened crystals, and consciousness lost. They are trapped within, forced to regret not fulfilling their focus as their body wanders aimlessly for eternity, with a hatred for all living beings. As a Cie'th serves its time, eventually it becomes a small, immobile crystal, known as a Cie'th stone. Their Cie'th forms still maintain their powers, making them very dangerous indeed.

Dustwalkers - One of the few remaining tribal races on this continent, the Dustwalkers are a nomadic humanoid race (they may very well be human, but no-one has ever seen the face of a Dustwalker), known for living on the edges of the expanding Eastern desert. Little else is known about them, other than that their farming techniques are likely causing the desert to spread. Although it is clear they have noticed the New Pulsians, there have been no conflicts, presumably because of the technological differences.

Moogles - A very strange race of creatures, they resemble a hybrid of a mole and a cat, with undersized wings like a bat. They are normally very small, and often enjoy human companionship, making them entertaining pets for youngsters and adults alike - their single biggest flaw however, is that they talk back... Some Moogles can change forms into something that can aid their companion, such as a weapon.

Flan - Originally created by Sanctum Fal'Cie to serve as cleaners and maintenance workers in unsafe environments, the Flan have proven to be hard workers and very enduring. They resemble giant blobs of slime, dressed in uniforms, and have no legs - they just squelch across floors, which also cleans them. A great many work in the factories of Hope's Reach, however it is believed that many vicious prototype Flan had escaped from the Whitewood Gapra prior to Cocoon's fall.

Report: Fisker Automotive Seeks Strategic Partner | socalTECH.com

Anaheim-based electric vehicle developer Fisker Automotive is seeking a strategic partner, as it looks to work its way out of its recent troubles, according to a report this week. In an interview with TheDetroitBureau, which covers the automotive industry, CEO Henrik Fisker said that Fisker is "actively engaged in conversations with potential strategic partners." Fisker Automotive had has a far-from-smooth launch, with battery recalls and issues, less-than-stellar reviews on its Fisker Karma, and most recently, a loss of a significant number of cars to Hurricane Sandy.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Another Starbucks may soon pop up around the corner, with the world's biggest coffee company planning to add at least 1,500 cafes in the U.S. over the next five years.

The plan, which would boost the number of Starbucks cafes in the country by about 13 percent, was announced at the company's investor day in New York Wednesday. Taking into account Canada and South America, the company plans to add a total of 3,000 new cafes in its broader Americas region.

Worldwide, the company says it will have more than 20,000 cafes by 2014, up from its current count of about 18,000. Much of that growth will come from China, which the company says will surpass Canada as its second-biggest market.

Although Starbucks has been intensifying its growth overseas and building its packaged-goods business back at home, the majority of its revenue still comes from its more than 11,100 cafes in the United States.

In an interview ahead of its investor day, CEO Howard Schultz said the U.S. expansion plans are based "on the current strength of our business"

Just a few months ago, the company had predicted it would open just 1,000 new cafes in the country over the next five years.

The upbeat expansion plans mark a turnaround from Starbucks' struggles during the recession. After hitting a rough patch, the company brought back Schultz as CEO in 2008 and embarked on massive restructuring effort that included closing 10 percent of its U.S. stores.

Cliff Burrows, who heads Starbucks' domestic business, said the problem wasn't that Starbucks was oversaturated, but that the company hadn't been careful about its store openings. In the years leading up to the downturn, the company was opening well over 1,000 stores a year. That led to cafes in locations where signs or traffic might not be optimal, he said.

Burrows said Starbucks has gotten more sophisticated, and noted that the cafes opened in recent years are among the company's best performers.

Sales at new cafes are averaging about $1 million a year, for example, above the company's target of $900,000. It costs about $450,000 to build a new cafe.

Since Starbucks already has a broad footprint, the company's expansion is intended to "deepen" its presence with additional stores in markets across the country, said Troy Alstead, Starbucks' chief financial officer. That means establishing stores ? including drive-thrus and smaller cafes ? in more convenient locations for customers. And even as it expands, Starbucks said it expects to maintain growth at cafes open at least a year. The figure, a key metric of health, has ranged between 7 percent and 8 percent globally in the past three years.

The continued U.S. sales growth will be fueled by the new products, such as Evolution premium juices and Via single-serve coffee packets. Looking forward, Starbucks is also looking to improve its food menu and is testing a new menu of baked goods from La Boulange, a small San Francisco-based chain it acquired earlier this year. The new croissants, loaf cakes and other items will spread to about 2,500 cafes next year and go national sometime in 2014, Burrows said. The company says only about a third of customers currently buy food with their drinks.

In a test aimed at building sales in the evening hours, the company also started serving beer and wine at about a dozen locations earlier this year, with food such as chicken skewers and dates wrapped in bacon.

And most recently, Starbucks announced plans to acquire Teavana, a chain that has 300 locations in shopping malls. When the announcement was made last month, Schultz said the company would "do for tea what it did for coffee."

That includes plans to expand Teavana's presence beyond the shopping mall with stand-alone shops that have "tea bars" that serve specialty drinks. The company declined to say when Starbucks cafes would begin serving Teavana drinks ? and it hasn't decided on whether it will continue to sell Tazo in cafes.

After a string of acquisitions in recent years to build on its core business, Schultz indicated Wednesday that the company would hold off on any additional purchases in the near future, noting that the company has "enough to handle."

To build its packaged-goods business, Starbucks plans to let customers earn points on their My Starbucks loyalty card starting next year when they purchase Starbucks bagged coffees in supermarkets and other outlets. Customers currently earn points only when they make purchases in Starbucks stores.

The picture isn't rosy around the globe, however. Europe remains a sore spot for Starbucks, with a key sales figure falling in the region 1 percent during the latest quarter. In an effort to boost results, the company has been closing underperforming stores and licensing of some of its cafes in the region.

In the United Kingdom, Starbucks is also embroiled in a row over its taxes. The company has been doing business in Britain for 15 years and has 700 outlets but it has yet to record a profit ? and therefore pay any taxes.

Starbucks says this is due to a complex process where its taxable profits in the U.K. are calculated after royalties paid to its European headquarters in the Netherlands have been deducted.

Following criticism in the U.K. parliament and a campaign by protest group U.K. Uncut, Starbucks said this week that it was reviewing its tax approach.
