China Turns On The Charm, In Hopes Nigeria Turns On The Oil

Source: IBTimes

Oil-rich Nigeria has an estimated 37.3 billion barrels of proven crude oil reserves as of 2011, according to the ?Oil & Gas Journal,? something that makes it appealing to China.

?It?s a long-standing policy of China to try to gain access to both energy and other natural resources around the world, but heavily in Africa,? Charles Ebinger, director of the Energy Security Initiative?at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., said.

China gave Nigeria a $1.1 billion low-interest loan, it was announced this week, and in return China can expect more Nigerian oil, going up from 20,000 barrels per day to 200,000 by 2015, Agence-France Presse reports.

As part of its energy security policy China does not want to rely on crude oil from the Middle East, from which it receives most of its imports. Nigeria is seen as another source to secure the free flow of the commodity.

Trade between China and Nigeria in 2000 totaled $2 billion and in just over 10 years grew to nearly $18 billion. In 2010, Nigeria had become China?s fourth-biggest African trading partner. Almost 90 percent of Nigeria?s exports to China are oil and gas products.

This deal also may be a way to tell other companies such as Royal Dutch Shell PLC (NYSE:RDS.A) to start investing more, Ebinger said.

Moto X using Verizon's network surfaces in leaked photo

What's said to be the Moto X has been breaking cover left and right, and now it's made yet another appearance. Android Central has scored a new photo of the device in question, and while it looks nearly identical to an earlier snapshot, a keen eye will notice a Verizon 4G logo sitting in the status bar. The outlet also notes that the soft navigation keys are slightly translucent like those in the previous leak, which may point to an unreleased version of Android. Paired with an internal document from Big Red that pegs the hardware for an August 23rd arrival, it looks like the Moto X is a sure bet on the carrier.

Ultima Forever - Quest for the Avatar iPad and iPhone preview

Originally designed as a massive, sprawling PC game, Ultima Forever - Quest for the Avatar fits better with iPad and iPhone. Not only is the multiplayer game easy to dip in and out of when you're on the bus, but its controls suit a touchscreen so perfectly that you wonder why developer Mythic explored its PC potential in the first place.

Truth be told, it didn't. Not on its own anyway. Another EA division, BioWare, was also tied to the project, with the studio's famed nous with role-playing game story writing to be coupled with one of the industry's oldest and most-loved adventure franchises. But that didn't work out, and Mythic was given sole reign over Ultima Forever.

It comes as no surprise therefore that the final iOS version of Ultima Forever - Quest for the Avatar is strongly reminiscent of early BioWare RPGs - the likes of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale. Its top-down graphical style, while more cartoony that those much-loved classics, has a distinctly retro feel, and the combat is of the old school click (or in this case tap) on an enemy and the fight is automated.

Where the game differs is in the use of humour in dialogue - like in the old Ultima titles - and the fact that this is a multiplayer game. Although Mythic says it is not an MMORPG, you can and are often advised to employ a friend or stranger's help to beat a certain dungeon or quest. Up to four can be in a group at once, although the developer says the entire game can be completed in single-player mode if necessary. Hundreds of players can meet in City Hubs, so you can always form parties there.

The dungeon crawls are perhaps the mainstay of Ultima Forever and, thankfully, randomly generated. That means you will never have to tread the same path. Another interesting facet - and an excellent feature for a mobile game - is that each dungeon or quest lists an approximated time it will take to complete. If you only have five minutes to spare while sitting on a bus, there are missions that should only take that long. Others could run much longer, so you would need to have that amount of time available, as others might be counting on you and you can't just pick up from where you left off later.

Ultima Forever is a persistently online game, so that needs to be considered too. You will need to have an internet connection within reach, so some forms of transport may not be suitable.

From our brief play with one of the dungeon crawls, which we did in co-op with the producer of the game, Carrie Gouskos, we instantly fell in love with how easy it was to jump right in and play instantly without complicated controls to learn or pages of dos and don'ts. Automated combat is perfectly suited to the iPad and even more so on an iPhone where you don't want to have to worry about lining up tiny pixels to get in the correct hit.

The game is an EA All Play title so is freemium. But we have been assured that you could play through the entire game without spending a penny. The biggest montary outlay for those who like to speed up their experience would be to buy keys, which are used for most things in the game. Better keys can be used on chests to get better swag, and equipment needs to be repaired or discarded. Keys are used as the currency to repair items, so you can see how tempting it would be to part with real cash in order to ensure your new armour doesn't degrade to tat.

However, keys can also be picked up in quests, so it is possible to keep your favourite items anyway.

Love or loath the freemium model, we're excited that we will be able to pick this up on its official UK release (it's on beta release in Canada at present) soon and for nothing. From just a short while with Ultima Forever, it is so far holding up to be the best example of how to do role-playing games on mobile platforms.

Saudi Arabia targeting Iran and Israel with ballistic missiles

The Chinese-made missiles, which date back to the 1980s, are not
remotely-guided and therefore have to be positioned in the direction of
their target before firing.

Saudi Arabia 'targeting Iran and Israel with ballistic missiles'
Saudi Arabia is targeting both Israel and Iran with powerful ballistic
missiles, new satellite photography shown by military experts to The
Telegraph suggests.
By Colin Freeman The Daily Telegraph 8:00PM BST 10 Jul 2013
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/saudiarabia/10172463/Saudi-Arabia-targeting-Iran-and-Israel-with-ballistic-missiles.html

Images analysed by experts at IHS Jane's Intelligence Review has revealed a
hitherto undisclosed surface-to-surface missile base deep in the Saudi
desert, with capabilities for hitting both countries.

Analysts who examined the photos spotted two launch pads with markings
pointing north-west towards Tel Aviv and north-east towards Tehran. They are
designed for Saudi Arabia's arsenal of lorry-launched DF 3 missiles, which
have a range of 1,500-2,500 miles and can carry a two-ton payload.

The base, believed to have been built within the last five years, gives an
insight into Saudi strategic thinking at a time of heightened tensions in
the Gulf.

While Saudi Arabia does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel, it
has long maintained discreet back channel communications as part of attempts
to promote stability in the region.

The two countries also have a mutual enemy in Iran, though, which has long
seen Saudi Arabia as a rival power in the Gulf. Experts fear that if Iran
obtains a nuclear weapon, Saudi Arabia would seek to follow suit.

The missile base, which is at al-Watah, around 125 miles south-west of the
Saudi capital, Riyadh, was discovered during a project by IHS Jane's to
update their assessment of Saudi Arabia's military capabilities.

It serves as both a training and launch facility, with the missiles stored
in an underground silo built into a rocky hillside. To the north of the
facility are two circle-shaped launch pads, both with compass-style markings
showing the precise direction that the launchers should fire in.

The Chinese-made missiles, which date back to the 1980s, are not
remotely-guided and therefore have to be positioned in the direction of
their target before firing.

"One appears to be aligned on a bearing of approximately 301 degrees and
suggesting a potential Israeli target, and the other is oriented along an
azimuth (bearing) of approximately 10 degrees, ostensibly situated to target
Iranian locations," said the IHS Jane's article, which is published on
Thursday.

While the lorry-launched missiles can theoretically be fired from any
location, the idea of having pre-planned directional markers is to ensure
that they can be deployed in accurate fashion as quickly as possible, said
Allison Puccioni, an image expert at IHS Jane's.

"There is a marked out spot for the launch truck to park in, which will
facilitate an expedited launch," she said.

Robert Munks, deputy editor of IHS Jane's Intelligence Review, said: "Our
assessment suggests that this base is either partly or fully operational,
with the launch pads pointing in the directions of Israel and Iran
respectively. We cannot be certain that the missiles are pointed
specifically at Tel Aviv and Tehran themselves, but if they were to be
launched, you would expect them to be targeting major cities.

"We do not want to make too many inferences about the Saudi strategy, but
clearly Saudi Arabia does not enjoy good relations with either Iran or
Israel."

Officials at the Saudi Embassy in London did not get back with a response
when contacted by The Telegraph. The Israeli Embassy in London said: "We
have no comment on this matter."

David Butter, an associate fellow with the Middle East and North Africa
program at Chatham House, the London-based foreign affairs think-tank, said
there was "little surprise" that the Saudis had the missiles in place.

"It would seem that they are looking towards some sort of deterrent
capability, which is an obvious thing for them to be doing, given that Iran
too is developing its own ballistic missiles," he said.

He added, though, that the Saudis would know that the site would come to the
attention of foreign intelligence agencies, and that the missile pad pointed
in the direction of Israel could be partly just for "for show".

"It would give the Iranians the impression that they were not being
exclusively targeted, and would also allow the Saudis to suggest to the rest
of the Arab world that they still consider Israel a threat."

Oil-rich Saudi Arabia considers itself one of the pre-eminent powers in the
Gulf region, but its Sunni Islam leadership has long been at loggerheads
with the Shia mullahs of Iran. The ongoing conflict in Syria, which Saudi
Arabia has backed the Sunni-dominated rebels and Iran has backed the
Shia-dominated regime of President Bashar al-Assad, has heightened fears of
a wider sectarian conflict.

A confidential diplomatic cable revealed in the "WikiLeaks" disclosures of
2010 said that King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia repeatedly exhorted the United
States to launch military strikes against Iran's nuclear programme and "cut
off the head of the snake"

Writers and Their Pets: Meghan Daum | Ploughshares

The ?Writers and Their Pets? series began with my own desire to celebrate my dog?Sally, and over the coming months I will also invite other writers to?share with the rest of us the details of their lives with beloved?pets.

We also ask contributors to the series to tell us about their favorite pets from literature; Meghan?s, she tells us, is Nana the Landseer Newfoundland from J.M. Barrie?s?Peter Pan.

We hope you enjoy her essay.

?Ladette Randolph, Editor-in-Chief

dog_is

A week before my dog, Rex, died this past March, I submitted him to a blog called The Daily Puppy. As oppressive internet cuteness goes, this is up there. People send in photos of their puppies accompanied by descriptions that are often in the first person, as though the dogs have composed their own personal ads. The goal is to win a coveted ?Puppy of the Day? slot on the home page, a designation that invites a trail of gushing comments on the order of ?ooh, you precious baaaby!? and ?you are so furrylicious I could hug you all day.?

The site also features a ?grown-up puppy of the day.? One morning, upon looking at Rex and getting the distinct feeling he didn?t have that many mornings left, I gathered up a handful of his best photos and sent them off, along with his (somewhat grammatically challenged) personal ad. ?My name is Rex and I am a grownup puppy . . . my humans say that there?s never been a dog loved as much as me.?

Rex was the grown-up puppy of the day the very next day.

Such blatant displays of sentimentality are almost unheard of for me. As a rule, I?m allergic to in-your-face adorableness, especially the kittens/babies/kids-saying-the-darndest-things kind that?s endemic to the internet. But I often make an exception for dogs and I always made an exception for Rex. My normally dry, undemonstrative personality flipped upside down in his presence. I talked baby talk to him. I hugged him constantly. I told him I loved him approximately 18 times a day. I used words like ?furrylicious.?

Rex was my longest serious relationship. When he was eight-weeks-old I plucked him off a farm in rural Nebraska, where he was one of two remaining pups in a litter of ten. In the beginning, I wondered if he was a runt or somehow lacked the showmanship to get himself chosen earlier, but I now know (schmaltz alert) that he was just waiting for me. Rex was the star of my show, an 85-pound yak-like creature that a friend once perfectly described as ?a mound of love.? He lived with me in no fewer than 12 houses and apartments and, when my husband came on to the scene (who I?m still convinced married me at least partly for my dog) Rex loved him as though he?d been there all along.

For much of our time together, Rex was less a pet than a partner, muse, and child rolled into one. He slept in my bed. He came along on vacations. His face was?and remains?the wallpaper of my digital self-presentation: my screensaver, my social media avatar, the photo glowing on my cell phone. Tacked to the bulletin board above my desk are five snapshots of Rex, one of my husband, and a couple of taxi receipts.

Rex died at nearly 13, a respectable age for a big dog. His Daily Puppy photos, some taken just a year earlier, show a sturdier, shinier dog than he was at the end, but there is nothing about his younger years that he didn?t carry into his last days. In his final moments, before the vet released him back to the big prairie skies from whence he came, he gobbled up a piece of bacon and smacked his lips as if to say ?now that was good.? He was right about that. And he was right about no dog ever being loved more. He was pretty much right all of the time.

Meghan Daum has been an opinion columnist at the Los Angeles Times for more than seven years. She is the author of three books: the essay collection My Misspent Youth;?the novel The Quality of Life Report;?and the memoir Life Would Be Perfect If I Lived In That House. Her essays and articles have appeared in many publications, including The New Yorker, Harper?s, and Vogue. She is currently working on a book about American sentimentality.

Ladette Randolph is the editor-in-chief of PLOUGHSHARES magazine, and the author of three books of fiction, most recently the novel HAVEN'S WAKE. She teaches in the MFA program at Emerson College and is co-owner of the manuscript consulting company RANDOLPH LUNDINE.

Placido Domingo in hospital in Spain with embolism

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) ? Opera singer Placido Domingo is in the hospital after suffering a blockage in an artery of the lungs.

Domingo's representative says the 72-year-old is expected to make a full recovery but will have to miss several appearances scheduled for later this month. He was admitted to the hospital Monday in Madrid.

Doctors say the pulmonary embolism was caused by a blood clot.

The singer's representative, Nancy Seltzer, says doctors have asked the Spanish tenor and conductor to rest for three to four weeks, but that healing time varies. His return to the stage will depend on how quickly he regains his strength.

It's not the first time Domingo has faced a serious medical condition.

Domingo returned to the stage just 45 days after undergoing colon cancer surgery in 2010 and has maintained a vigorous schedule and displayed an uncommon vitality at an age when most stars have stepped away from the spotlight.

He is the most visible opera singer in the world and has performed more than 140 roles, expanding his repertoire to include baritone roles in the past half-decade. The Three Tenors member also recently was named the new goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for his efforts in spreading classical music around the world.

Domingo has canceled his five performances in Daniel Catan's "Il Postino," which were to begin July 17 at the Teatro Real in Madrid, as well as an appearance on July 21 at Plaza Mayor.

BYU elite at turning players into NBA prospects

According to research at Emory University, BYU is one of the best schools in the country at turning recruits into draftable, NBA prospects.

A recent story out of Emory University's Sports Marketing Analytics group ranked BYU 2nd among non-BCS conference schools at transforming high school talent into NBA draft picks. They looked at recruiting classes from 2002 to 2011. Nevada was top among non-BCS schools. Truth be told, Nevada and BYU had the highest rates of any schools in the country.

* Chart courtesy of Emory Sports Marketing Analytics. For a full explanation of their system and the complete rankings, look here.

Of course, this is not apples to apples. In the time period covered, BYU only had one 4+ star recruit according to Rivals.com (DeMarcus Harrison); Duke averages nearly 3 of those recruits every single season. What the BYU coaching staff has excelled at is taking 3-star recruits (like Jimmer Fredette and Trent Plaisted) and turning them into NBA prospects. Or in one extreme case, they took a JC transfer (Rafael Araujo) and groomed him to be a lottery pick.

Why is this important? Well, this is the opposite of the criticism Bronco Mendenhall has endured from some observers about his inability to turn players into NFL prospects. That's mainly been put to bed with the early selection of Ziggy Ansah in the NFL draft, and the draft prospects of Kyle Van Noy and Cody Hoffman in 2014.

As the line goes, recruiting should be helped if you can show high school prospects that their professional dreams are more likely at your school than another. Not that Dave Rose is going to start handing out analytical reports to parents and high school athletes, but the point Rose could (and maybe does) make is that BYU has been a well above average place for 3-star recruits to turn into NBA draftees. It's not just Jimmer either. Trent Plaisted was drafted, Araujo was a nobody, and Travis Hansen was drafted as well if you go back a little further. Brandon Davies made an NBA summer team, and Tyler Haws is likely to get drafted and is playing for team USA.

BYU is not, in most cases, in the business of recruiting the elite hoops talent. This incoming class (which includes two 4-star recruits in Nick Emery and Eric Mika) is a huge exception to that. But what if Rose can get the best 3-star talent, in part by using the NBA draft success of guys like Jimmer and Plaisted as a recruiting pitch?

I don't think this report or these data points are likely to be the deciding factor in a recruit's decision, or will bring in 5-star talent; as Jabari Parker recently showed the world, BYU is not in the elite schools. But Rose (and Steve Cleveland before him) have shown they can create an experience that seems to enhance a recruit's chances to make an NBA roster.

Not many 3-star recruits make the NBA, and BYU is one of the best places to make that happen.

Tories call for London Labour police probe

Monday, July 8, 2013
1:36 PM

The Metropolitan Police has been asked to investigate the Labour Party?s selection process in two London constituencies following allegations that the Unite union tried to rig the result of a candidate selection in Falkirk.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

The request has come from the Conservative Party vice-chairman Bob Neill, who has written to Met Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe asking him to look into allegations of possible fraud relating to Ilford North and Lewisham Deptford constituencies.

The call comes after Labour handed over evidence to police in Scotland about claims that the Unite union tried to fix the result of a candidate selection in Scotland by packing a constituency with members, whose subscriptions it paid.

Mr Neill described Falkirk as ?the tip of the iceberg?, noting that a leaked Unite document suggested the union was getting involved in the choice of a candidate for the 2015 general election in 41 seats across the country.

In his letter to the Commissioner, Mr Neill said: ?I am concerned that this instance is just the tip of the iceberg, as Unite themselves admit they are targeting at least another 40 Labour Party parliamentary selections for similar treatment. Senior Labour Party sources have also confessed that the problems go wider than just Falkirk.?

The Tory MP cited reports that in Ilford North Unite were offering their members free Labour Party membership in exchange for attending a meeting with general secretary Len McCluskey.

He also quoted allegations from a Labour London activist that the union was ?bankrolling? a number of campaigns, including in Lewisham Deptford.

A Labour source dismissed the allegations, saying: ?This is a silly political stunt. We have no evidence of possible criminal behaviour anywhere outside Falkirk.

?If Bob Neill has, he should produce it. If he has not, he should stop wasting police time.?

The new allegations came as Labour leader Ed Miliband came under pressure to take radical steps to curb trade union influence over his party.

He is expected to use a high-stakes speech tomorrow to announce reforms to the way the party is organised - including caps on spending in candidate selections and elections to senior party positions. He has already scrapped a Blair-era scheme under which unions were able to pay the subs of new members which they recruited to the party.

The Labour leader said at the weekend that he wanted to ?mend... not end? the link with unions to give more influence to individual members.

Watch Live Video of a Historically Huge Sunspot Right Here, Right Now

Today starting at 2PM Eastern time, a sunspot 11 times the size of our planet will be aimed right at us, and you can watch it live on Slooh SpaceCamera's feed. Slooh, which collects pictures and video of celestial events, will be streaming video from the Lunt 152 solar telescope at Prescott Observatory in Arizona. The sunspot, AR1785, is one of the biggest of the current solar cycle, and will be visible for about 25 minutes. Another nearby sunspot, AR1787 (real creative names here), has been recently active, and while no strong flares have been reported yet, there's always the threat of a solar flare disrupting electronics and communication. Staring at the sun is bad, so stick to the video feed and don't destroy your retinas. [Slooh SpaceCamera via Space.com]

Colon cancer screening program facing waitlists, delays

A province-wide expansion of a self-screening program for colon cancer underway on Vancouver Island may have to be curtailed because of a backlog in follow-up tests.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority was the first regional health authority to implement the provincial-government program for self-screening.

The Fecal Immunochemical Test, or FIT, allows people between the ages of 50 and 75 to mail in stool samples to health authorities to screen for colorectal cancer, which is the second highest cause of cancer deaths in B.C.

The FIT test allows for screening of microscopic amounts of blood in stool; if blood is detected, a colonoscopy is in order.

But in Victoria, referrals for follow-up tests have tripled since April, when the self-screening program was introduced and that's led to a four-month long wait list when the standard should be two months.

B.C.'s Minister of Health Terry Lake says that's a concern, and it could delay the expansion of the self-screening program to other health authorities.

"This is why we wanted to do it in one health authority first, before rolling it out to the rest of the province, so we know what the challenges would be," said Lake.

Lake says his staff is consulting with the Vancouver Island Health Authority to find ways to reduce the backlog.

For Sale By Owner? Or Drop a Sale By Owner? | Trade Finance Bank

Lots of people tend to think that by selecting an agent, they are losing on money that they might have saved if they sold their home. This couldnt be further from the truth. This thrilling reed real estate group wiki has limitless impressive cautions for why to consider it. To frequently, people put their particular homes up for-sale and then wait until the best buyer comes along. Until THAT happens but how long does that house remain on the market?

Everyone is frequently mistaken concerning the role of a real estate agent. The adviser doesnt just make a commission off a purchase or sell of the home, but instead, it is in-the most useful interest of the real-estate professional to do everything possible for their client. What this means, is the ability of the real estate agent to tap into sales and marketing channels the average house owner or purchaser couldn?t use.

People who buy or sell houses do not have access to the variable listing services, weekly ads in major news outlets (report, radio) and television, and a long lead network that provides new recommendations. As an alternative, a for sale by owner condition expectations for newspaper ads and recommendations to sell their house.

Whats more powerful and easily available to an instantaneous consumer?

I think, for sale by owners are doing themselves an injustice by handling the transaction themselves. A person may be in a better position when they avail themselves all of the possible resources to take action to sell their property, when i gave the afore-mentioned reasons. These resources are at the touch of the willing and experienced real estate agent.

So just how does a fsbo find the right agent? They must ask their friends and colleagues on who they understand that are designed for a solid property deal. Word of mouth carries a large amount of weight in the real-estate world therefore the fsbo must do their own due diligence and find out which company and which particular agent to-use. Female or male, all of it visits personal choice. Ask for the agents background to see how many income last month they effectively brokered. I learned about study andy reed by searching Google. Ask them what their plan of attack is to sell the home and what different aspects they are planning to take. Fans deliver for Davis

Via MLB?s official Twitter, here are the starting position players for the 2013 All-Star Game at Citi Field:

Nothing too shocking on the National League side of things. In a more Sabermetrically-inclined universe, Matt Carpenter could have gotten the nod over Brandon Phillips. If Troy Tulowitzki isn?t healthy enough to return, you?ll see either Jean Segura or Everth Cabrera at shortstop. ?CarGo? refers to Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, not Carlos Gomez of the Brewers. Gomez probably should have gotten the nod over Bryce Harper given the playing time disparity. (By the way, Harper?s 201 PA total is closer to that of Yasiel Puig ? 127 ? than Gomez?s 325.)

In the American League, one could make a solid numbers-based case for Jason Kipnis over both Robinson Cano and Dustin Pedroia. Jhonny Peralta has been markedly better than J.J. Hardy but has half the home run total. Adam Jones could have been a reserve in favor of someone like Brett Gardner or Jacoby Ellsbury.

The pitchers:

Shocking not to see Stephen Strasburg, 4-6 but with a 2.24 ERA, not make it. Adam Wainwright won?t pitch in the All-Star Game, so it seems pretty open-and-shut that Matt Harvey gets the nod to start the game in his team?s stadium. With Jason Kipnis on the roster, the ?one player from each team? rule was satisfied, making it odd that Justin Masterson earned a spot while Royals hurler Ervin Santana was left off. But other than that, there aren?t any huge omissions as far as AL pitchers go. And the reserves:

Allen Craig getting the last first base roster spot for the NL over Freddie Freeman is sure to cause some debate. In a surprisingly stacked year at the position, Ian Desmond has been the fourth-best shortstop in the NL, which may explain why he didn?t make the cut. Where is Reds center fielder Shin-Soo Choo and his .417 on-base percentage?

Josh Donaldson is the biggest AL omission that jumps out at you. The Athletics third baseman has a .903 OPS, fourth-best among all MLB third basemen and third-best in the American League behind Miguel Cabrera and Evan Longoria. Longoria, by the way, also not an All-Star.

The Final Vote candidates:

We may see Yasiel Puig in the All-Star Game, after all. The Cuban, setting the baseball world on fire, has a 1.155 OPS through his first 30 Major League games. All five of the AL candidates are pitchers, and relievers at that. Would that we could submit two Final Votes for NL players and zero for the AL in this case.

Polished video claims to show budget iPhone, will sell you Android imitation today

Some things just look too good to be true, and this extremely polished hands-on -- purporting to be the rumored, as yet unconfirmed budget iPhone -- is possibly one of them. However, this comes via sources associated with M.I.C. Gadget, which has previous form in this area, and it does tally with previously seen incarnations. So, is this just a collection of design cues put together in order to sell the "Bear" brand Android imitation shown later in the same video (past the break,) or could it be the real iPhone housing? At the moment we're buying neither, but with such a detailed set of images (at the source,) it provides a tantalising taste of what could be, if nothing else.

Pakistan, China set sights on Arabian Sea link

BEIJING?China and Pakistan set their sights Friday on developing a transport link through rugged mountains and lawless lands, a route they hope will boost economic growth and bring critical oil supplies to power-hungry China much faster.

A broad agreement for the "economic corridor" was among eight pacts signed following a meeting in Beijing between Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The 2,000-kilometer (1,200-mile) transport link was described as a "long-term plan" to connect Kashgar in northwestern China to the Pakistani port of Gwadar, likely by road in the beginning and possibly by rail later.

Pakistan is hoping to attract greater Chinese investment to revive its moribund economy beset by inefficiency, corruption, political instability and chronic electricity shortages, while expanding two-way trade that exceeded $12 billion for the first time last year.

For its part, China wants Pakistan to crack down on insurgents from China's Muslim Uighur minority who have taken refuge in Pakistan's northwest alongside al-Qaida-linked extremists. Pakistan says it has killed or extradited several of those militants over the past few years, but acknowledges that some remain at large in the area.

Another agreement is for a fiber-optic cable to be laid from the Chinese border to the Pakistani city of Rawalpindi which will boost Pakistan's access to international communications networks. China is to provide 85 percent of the financing for the three-year project's $44 million budget, with Pakistan covering the rest.

Sharif's visit to China is his first foreign trip since returning to power last month, highlighting the importance Pakistan places on its 63-year-old relationship with its most important ally in the region. The two cooperate closely in diplomatic and defense affairs, and share a common rival in their mutual neighbor and occasional military opponent India.

"Let me tell you very candidly and very sincerely that what I am witnessing here on my visit to Beijing, it reminds me of the saying our friendship is higher than the Himalayas and deeper than the deepest sea in the world, and sweeter than honey," Sharif told Li at the start of their meeting, employing the usual effusive language with which the two nations describe their relationship.

A joint statement issued after the meeting affirmed their support for an Afghan-led peace effort in the country following the withdrawal of U.S. troops next year. It said they would "work with the regional countries and the international community to help Afghanistan achieve peace, stability and security."

China provides Pakistan with aid and foreign investment, while Islamabad offers Beijing important diplomatic backing in the face of Muslim-majority nations who might otherwise criticize China's handling of its Muslim population.

Hopes for road, rail and pipeline links from Kashgar to the presently little-used port at Gwadar received a major boost when control of the port was transferred to China's state-owned China Overseas Ports Holding Co. Ltd. in February. Built by Chinese workers and opened in 2007, it is undergoing a major expansion to turn it into a full-fledged, deep water commercial port.

The statement said a joint committee will be set up that will oversee the upgrading and realigning of the 1,300-kilometer (800-mile) Karakoram highway running from Kashgar to the Pakistani town of Abbottabad over mountain passes as high as 4,693 meters (15,397 feet).

If the transport link takes off, oil from the Middle East could be offloaded at Gwadar, which is located just outside the mouth of the Gulf, and transported to China through the lawless Baluchistan province in Paksitan and the rugged Karakoram mountains. Such a link would vastly cut the 12,000-kilometer (7,500-mile) route that Mideast oil supplies must now take to reach Chinese ports.

Gwadar could also provide an outlet for copper and other resources that Chinese companies plan to mine in Afghanistan, while offering a base for China's navy to operate in the Indian Ocean in competition with India.

China has already begun upgrading the Karakoram highway and has dispatched workers to develop projects high in the mountains of the Pakistan-controlled part of Kashmir.

The geographical and security challenges to the link remain daunting, however, and any working link is likely many years away. It would go through territory menaced by the Pakistani Taliban, while nationalists in Baluchistan view it as an attempt by the ethnic Punjabis who largely run Pakistan to strengthen their control over the desert region and plunder its natural resources.

(AP Photo/Family Photo)

(AP) ? Police in Brazil have seized passports belonging to a woman and her 6-year-old daughter, stranding them in South America for about a month amid an international custody dispute with the child's father.

Thirty-three-year-old Shauna Hadden and her daughter, Ava Machado, have been in Brazil since late May, when they began a trip Hadden said was intended to connect the girl with the father she hadn't seen in more than three years.

Hadden's mother, Linda, said Friday the pair had already arrived in Rio de Janiero on her way to visit Ava's father, 32-year-old Donizete Machado, when her daughter received a phone call from a mutual friend warning her that Machado planned to keep the girl.

Instead of taking a flight to southern Brazil to meet Machado, Shauna Hadden and her daughter flew north to stay with friends in the northeastern city of Fortaleza, Linda Hadden said.

Then federal police seized Shauna Hadden's passport along with her daughter's in early June.

On Friday, a lawyer for Machado confirmed the passports were confiscated following a request by the girl's father but denied he wants custody of the girl, whom Hadden has had full custody of since the couple split in 2009.

Attorney Isabel Feijo said Machado sought seizure of their passports because Hadden skipped his scheduled meeting with Ava.

"He wants her to visit him and his family, and if the mother agrees to that, the request to seize the passport will immediately be withdrawn, we'll drop the case," Feijo said Friday.

Feijo said Hadden ? using tickets purchased by her ex-husband ? arrived in Rio de Janeiro on May 21 and was supposed to meet Machado in the city of Florianopolis before traveling together to the town of Criciuma, about 125 miles (200 kilometers) to the southeast.

When Hadden and her daughter failed to show, Feijo filed court papers on May 27 asking for their passports to be seized.

In court filings, Feijo alleged Hadden never intended to allow her daughter to see Machado and instead used the tickets to meet an online boyfriend.

Hadden's family called that claim ridiculous, but in an exchange of Facebook messages from April 16 ? five weeks before her trip ? Hadden voices an intention to visit the man named in the passport seizure request, a resident of the town where she's now staying.

Hadden's mother said she believes her daughter intended to visit her ex-husband because they had purchased gifts for his nieces and nephews that Shauna Hadden took with her. Linda Hadden said it's possible her daughter is dating the other man but he wasn't the sole reason for her trip.

Machado, who works as a house painter, had been expelled from the U.S. because he entered the country illegally through Mexico, his attorney confirmed.

Rafaela Santos Martins da Rosa, the federal judge overseeing the case, said she couldn't provide details because the case involves a minor and falls under secrecy laws. Brazil's federal police declined to comment. The U.S. Embassy in Brasilia would confirm only that Hadden is in Fortaleza and is receiving consular services.

U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Rep. Richard Neal, both of Massachusetts, say they've been trying to intervene in an effort to get mother and daughter back to the United States.

It's common in Brazil for officials to confiscate the passports of parents if a judge feels there is a chance that a mother or father may try to take a child out of the country without the other parent's permission.

This is not the first time that parents from Brazil and the United States have become embroiled in a custody dispute attracting international attention.

In 2009, a five-year custody battle involving a boy with family in New Jersey and Brazil ended with the 9-year-old Sean Goldman's return to the United States with his father David Goldman.

The case had pitted David Goldman against his son's Brazilian stepfather, who had cared for the boy after his mother died in childbirth. The boy's mother had brought him to her native Brazil for what was supposed to be a vacation, but she stayed before divorcing her son's father and remarrying. The boy's stepfather had temporary custody of him, before the conclusion of a case that strained relations between Brazil and the United States.

When the boy's handover was blocked shortly before the custody dispute ended, the U.S. Senate put a hold on a trade deal worth about $2.75 billion a year to Brazil. The dispute prompted high-level discussions involving President Barack Obama and his then-counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Shauna Hadden has a Facebook page called "Trapped in Brazil" that she is updating as she waits for the case to be resolved.

In an email to The Associated Press on Friday, she said she and her daughter are stressed and want to come home.

"Ava is tired and having a hard time," she said.
