Can You Tell Emotion From Faces Alone? A new study suggests that when people evaluated just facial expressions ? without cues from the rest of the body ? they couldn't tell if the face was showing a positive or negative emotion. Enlarge this photo to see the answers.

Photos of athletes in their moment of victory or defeat usually show faces contorted with intense emotion. But a new study suggests that people actually don't use those kinds of extreme facial expressions to judge how a person is feeling.

Instead, surprisingly, people rely on body cues.

Hillel Aviezer, a psychology researcher at Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, wanted to see how accurately people can read intense, real-world facial expressions ? instead of the standardized, posed images of facial expressions that are usually used in lab tests.

So he and his colleagues decided to do some experiments using images of professional tennis players. That's because, in top tennis matches, the stakes are sky high, and professional players instantly have an intense emotional reaction to winning or losing a critical point. And usually, people have no trouble figuring out what emotions a tennis player is feeling when they see a photo of that player standing on a tennis court, clutching a racket.

"When I look at a sports magazine, and I see the full picture of a person winning a point, and he has his full gesture, the whole picture makes perfect sense to me," says Aviezer. "The face looks like a victorious face, and the body looks victorious; everything together seems to make perfect sense."

But that sense of certainty disappeared, he found, when he took images of tennis winners and losers, and erased everything but the face. When he showed just those isolated faces to people, they couldn't tell if something positive or negative was going on.

"This was really a very striking finding," says Aviezer.

Then he showed people images of tennis players with the faces erased. People had to judge winners from losers based solely on the rest of the body. "And when people saw the body alone, they easily knew if this was a positive or negative emotion," explains Aviezer.

This is counterintuitive, he says, because people usually assume that if they are getting an emotional message, it must come from the facial expression.

In fact, when Aviezer shows people full images of tennis players ? the faces plus the body ? and asks them to describe how they know what the player is feeling, people usually describe the face. They claim to see tell-tale clues in the player's eyes or mouth. "When in fact it's an illusion," says Aviezer. "They have this false idea of information in the face when really it's coming from the body."

To test this in another way, he manipulated the photographs. He'd take the face of a winner and paste it onto the body of a loser, or vice versa.

What he found was that the exact same face would be interpreted as showing a positive or negative emotion, depending on which body it was on. These results are reported in the journal Science.

"I think that many people will find this very surprising," says Lisa Feldman Barrett, a scientist at Northeastern University who studies emotions.

These studies challenge long-held assumptions about the importance of facial expressions, she says.

"When you and I talk to each other and we look at each other, we're really looking at each other's faces. That's where our attention is. And so the assumption has been that that's where all the information is, too," says Barrett. "But these studies show very clearly that that's not the case."

These findings add to a growing body of evidence that when we're trying to figure out another person's emotional state, we rely on a lot more than just the face.

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Back-to-back explosions tore through tents housing Shiite pilgrims in southern Iraq on Thursday, the deadliest in a wave of bombings that killed at least 43 people nationwide, officials said.

The attacks in Hillah began with a roadside bombing near tents set up for Shiites commemorating the 7th century death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Hussein. That was quickly followed by a car bomb targeting emergency response teams.

The explosions, which occurred in a busy commercial area, killed at least 29 people and wounded as many as 90, a police officer said, making it the deadliest attack in the city this year.

Twisted and charred vehicles were left outside damaged stores as shopkeepers collected their strewn merchandise from the bloodstained pavement. Hillah is 95 kilometers (60 miles) south of Baghdad.

Ali Hussein, 44, was walking near his house when he heard the two thunderous explosions near the commercial area about 200 meters (yards) from his house.

"I rushed to the blast site and I saw burning cars and pieces of flesh everywhere," said Hussein, who owns a grocery store. "There were small blood pools all around the place," he added, blaming the security forces who "should do better in order to protect the innocent people."

Just hours earlier, a parked car exploded near the shrine of Imam Hussein in the Shiite city of Karbala, killing six people and wounding 20, another police officer said.

Karbala, 90 kilometers (55 miles) south of Baghdad, is one of the holiest cities in Shiite Islam and the place where Imam Hussein and his brother, Imam Abbas, are buried. Hundreds of thousands of Shiites flock to their golden-domed shrines every year.

Such religious ceremonies have often been targeted by Sunni insurgents seeking to foment sectarian violence and undermine the Shiite-led government.

A suicide bomber also drove his explosives-laden car into a police checkpoint in the mainly Sunni city of Fallujah, 65 kilometers (40 miles) west of the capital, killing three policemen and wounding 11 others, a police official in the city said.

And in the northern city of Mosul, a parked car bomb went off as a police patrol passed, killing two people and wounded two, police said. Another police patrol was hit by a roadside bomb in the town of Balad Ruz, 70 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of Baghdad, killing one policeman and wounding six others.

In other violence, a roadside bomb killed an Iraqi soldier and wounded five others in Taji, north of Baghdad, and a parked car bomb struck a restaurant in Madain, southeast of the capital, killing a civilian and wounding 12 others, according to police.

Five health officials confirmed the casualty figures. All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information.

The nationwide death toll was the highest since Oct. 27 when 40 people were killed in a string of bombings and other attacks around the country.

Although violence has ebbed since the peak of insurgency several years ago, attacks are still frequent against security forces, government officials and civilians. No one claimed responsibility for Thursday's bombings, but car bombs, shootings and roadside devices are the hallmark of al-Qaida in Iraq.

Asian shares fall as focus shifts to U.S. budget talks

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares ended a seven-day winning streak on Wednesday and commodities eased as investors fretted that a lack of progress in talks on U.S. budget woes risked putting the world's largest economy into recession, dragging down global growth with it.

European shares will likely track Asian peers lower. Financial spreadbetters predicted London's FTSE 100, Paris's CAC-40 and Frankfurt's DAX will open down as much as 0.5 percent. A 0.1 percent drop in U.S. stock futures also hinted at a soft Wall Street open.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.5 percent, retreating from Tuesday's nearly three-week highs, with materials and energy sectors leading the declines.

"The global economy, China, Europe, needs the U.S. economy to grow, and that is why the pressure to get this deal done is greater than before," said Carl Larry, a derivatives broker at the Houston-based Atlas Commodities. "The global economy can't afford for America to slip back into a recession."

Shares in resource-reliant Australian eased 0.2 percent, off Tuesday's two-week highs as top miners fell on weaker gold prices.

Australia's Bureau of Resources and Energy Economics said committed investment in major resources and energy projects, the main driver of Australian growth, still rose to A$268.4 billion ($280.5 billion) at October 31 from A$260.8 billion at end-April, but the rise partly reflected higher project costs and masked a fall in the number of projects. A fall in commodity prices due to a drop-off in Chinese demand also weighed on shares.

"Markets don't really provide any sort of compelling investment value here at present because the grey cloud of uncertainty still overhangs the economic climate, in particular across Europe and the U.S., but also filtering into this part of the world as well," Jamie Spiteri, senior dealer at Shaw Stockbroking, said of Australian shares.

U.S. stocks slid overnight after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid expressed disappointment over little progress in dealing with the approaching "fiscal cliff" of deep cuts in government spending and big tax hikes early next year.

The Shanghai Composite Index slid 0.9 percent to its lowest in nearly four years as growth-sensitive sectors sank, extending losses after closing on Tuesday below 2,000 points for the first time since January 2009.

The weak Chinese stock market, along with doubts over the U.S. ability to resolve its fiscal crisis, strengthened demand for sovereign debt, helping to push the 10-year Japanese government bond futures price to a 9-1/2-year high of 144.79, while U.S. Treasuries clung to gains made on Tuesday.

Japan's Nikkei stock average slumped 1 percent, after closing on Tuesday at a seven-month high.

The Nikkei had risen 8.8 percent over the past two weeks since the government announced a December 16 election. Japan's main opposition party is forecast to win power, and investors expect it will force the Bank of Japan into aggressive easing.

EUROPE LACKS CONFIDENCE

Tuesday's agreement by international lenders to cut Greece's debt offered relief that it has averted an imminent bankruptcy, but uncertainty remained over the lack of details on how Athens will carry out budget reforms to meet its new debt targets as analysts cited the deal as falling short of addressing medium-term financing and debt sustainability issues.

"The uncertainty brought by this approach makes European assets, including the EUR, vulnerable to global growth risks. For that reason, we think the European muddle through amplifies the market's response to the fiscal cliff discussion in the US," Barclays Capital analysts said in a note.

The euro fell 0.2 percent to $1.2924, after peaking at $1.3010 on the Greece news on Tuesday, its highest level since October 31.

Worries over the fiscal crisis overshadowed positive U.S. economic data that showed improvement in durable orders, the real estate sector and consumer confidence, which hit a 4-1/2-year high in November.

The dollar dropped 0.3 percent against the yen to 81.85. U.S. crude futures were steady around $87.16 a barrel while Brent edged up 0.2 percent to $110.13. London copper dropped 0.4 percent to $7,776 a tonne.

Spot gold inched down 0.1 percent to $1,739.40 an ounce after slipping on Tuesday for a second session.

Southeast Asia kept some hopes that the damage to their economies may be contained from global growth deterioration triggered by the prolonged euro zone debt crisis.

Indonesia, Southeast Asia's biggest economy, sees annual economic growth in the fourth quarter at 5.9-6.3 percent, while the Philippine economy picked up more than expected in the third quarter, with the government expecting the economy to surpass its 2012 full-year growth target of 5-6 percent.

Investors were sidelined in Asian credit markets, keeping the spreads on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index little changed from Tuesday's levels.

Facebook 'copyrighting' trend: Fact or fiction?

Here we go again.

Another viral hoax is circulating around Facebook, where many users are claiming to "copyright" their material. The long, rambling status update you may have seen goes like this: "I hereby declare that my copyright is attached to all of my personal details, illustrations, comics, etc."

But is this status update necessary? Not at all, according to one local media expert and several other official news sources. Facebook itself issued an official statement, calling it a rumor that it owns anything you post.

Benjamin Diggles, an executive at Webtrends, a digital marketing company in Portland, said it's true that Facebook can use a photo or video you post to direct better ads your way or promote Facebook.

?But they?re not really looking to take a photo you take on Mount Hood and go sell it,? Diggles said. ?No, absolutely not. I?d be shocked. Do they have time for that? No way.?

Digital marketing experts say Facebook?s focus is selling ads. They may track your photo captions and other information to somehow direct the right companies to create specific ads for you, but that?s about it.

So the fear that social media accounts will take your photos and sell them, or give them to police or your boss ? that scare is unfounded, Diggles said.

?I think people fantasize about what can be collected about them, and how it can be used against them,? he said.

MENA and Kuwait to the fore

SAP is currently in the midst of executing a four-year additional spend plan across MENA.

Using biomarkers from prehistoric human feces to track settlement and agriculture

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? For researchers who study Earth's past environment, disentangling the effects of climate change from those related to human activities is a major challenge, but now University of Massachusetts Amherst geoscientists have used a biomarker from human feces in a completely new way to establish the first human presence, the arrival of grazing animals and human population dynamics in a landscape.

Doctoral student Robert D'Anjou and his advisor Raymond Bradley, director of the Climate System Research Center at UMass Amherst, with UMass colleagues Nick Balascio and David Finkelstein, describe their findings in the current online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"We are really excited about how well this method worked," D'Anjou says. "Without even knowing it, early settlers were recording their history for us, and in the most unlikely of ways, in their poop. The prehistoric settlers and their livestock pooped and their feces washed into the lake, which over time left a record of trace amounts of specific molecules that are only produced in the intestines of higher mammals. When you find these molecules at certain concentrations and in specific ratios, it provides an unmistakable indicator that people were living in the area."

Bradley adds, "This approach opens the door to other studies, where the presence of humans is uncertain; we believe it has great potential for much wider applications in archaeology."

D'Anjou carried out the work just north of the Arctic Circle, at Lake Liland in the Lofoten Islands in northern Norway, where humans were thought to have lived in prehistoric settlements from the early Iron Age through the Viking period. They extracted two sediment cores from the lake bottom and used radiocarbon measurements and the presence of volcanic ash from Iceland to establish their chronology. The sediments provided a continuous record extending back roughly 7,000 years.

Paleoclimatologists have long used markers in lakebed sediments, such as charcoal from humans' fires and pollen from cultivated plants, as a natural archive of environmental changes to estimate when humans first began having an impact. But these indirect indicators must be used with care when reconstructing the history of a place because it's not always clear that they indicate human activity in the same area.

By contrast, the presence of a molecular biomarker directly linked to humans, one transmitted through their bowel movements, offers "a strong human signal," as the authors put it, one that can be dated with "excellent chronological control." D'Anjou and colleagues extracted the compound coprostanol, a molecular marker formed from the digestion of cholesterol in the human gut, from the sediment, plus other sterols characteristic of other mammals to estimate the presence of sheep and cattle. From these, they were able to produce a long-term record of the presence and relative population size of humans extending back over thousands of years at the site.

In addition, the geoscientists used two other molecular markers to reconstruct the vegetation history: relative length of carbon molecules found in leaf waxes (different in forest and grassland), and pyrolytic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) as evidence of fire in the Lake Liland area. They say that taken together, the sediment cores, vegetation changes and fire records clearly define a pre-settlement period with no detectable human activity in the lake's water catchment area from about 7,300 to 2,250 years ago.

At that point, however, changes in the background state appear in the record, marking an "abrupt shift" to significantly increased levels of pyrolytic PAH first, followed by increased human fecal material. This likely indicates that as people moved in, they first cleared the land by burning before establishing a permanent settlement, the researchers say. "This interpretation is bolstered," they add, by the leaf wax record that shows a "marked transition to a more grassland-dominated landscape beginning at this time."

After the initial influx of people to the region, D'Anjou and colleagues say the record shows a lull in human activity from about 2,040 to 1,900 years ago, reflected in all markers. After this, the human and livestock populations steadily increased to a local maximum around the year 500, based on the fecal record, then fell again to a second minimum around the year 850.

The climate scientists note a further decline in human activity and population to another minimum at about AD 1750 that coincided with the highest relative grassland cover for the entire 7,300-year history. Findings related to human activity over the past 7,300 years in northern Norway correlate well with other climate reconstructions, in particular summer temperature patterns indicating poor vs. fruitful growing seasons. This shows that the early settlers were vulnerable to small changes in summer temperature at this far northern location.

Overall, the authors say, the new fecal markers are likely to prove valuable in many other places, to distinguish natural from human factors that influenced the environment in the past.

SEC Chairwoman Relinquishes Post

The head of the government's financial sector watchdog is stepping down.

Mary Schapiro, who chairs the Securities and Exchange Commission, announced today that she will leave her post next month after four years of working to retool the agency after a severe financial crisis it failed to prevent.

"Over the past four years, we have brought a record number of enforcement actions, engaged in one of the busiest rule-making periods, and gained greater authority from Congress to better fulfill our mission," Schapiro said in a statement.

Appointed by President Obama in January 2009 and unanimously confirmed, Schapiro was the first woman to lead the SEC.

"When Mary agreed to serve nearly four years ago, she was fully aware of the difficulties facing the SEC and our economy as a whole," Obama said in a statement. "But she accepted the challenge, and today, the SEC is stronger and our financial system is safer and better able to serve the American people - thanks in large part to Mary's hard work."

The administration has praised Schapiro, 57, for mounting more aggressive enforcement operations across the financial industry, initiating a record number of cases, and for helping shape the new set of regulations and consumer protections included in the Dodd-Frank Wall Street overhaul legislation.

But critics point out that Schapiro's SEC failed to nab and punish financial industry wrongdoers in any significant way, although some would likely agree that she has improved the agency from where it was in 2008, when, among the agency's many failures, it missed the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme.

Obama has named SEC commissioner Elisse Walter - a George W. Bush appointee - to chair the agency going forward.

Prescribe morning-after pills in advance, say pediatricians

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wading into the incendiary subject of birth control for young teenagers, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) on Monday called on the nation's pediatricians to counsel all of their adolescent patients about emergency contraception and make advance prescriptions for it available to girls under 17.

Because current federal policy bans over-the-counter sales of the pills to girls under 17, having a prescription on hand could help younger teens obtain emergency contraception more quickly than if they have to contact a physician only after they need it.

Calling the AAP decision "significant," Susan Wood, former assistant commissioner for women's health at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), said, "it's not often you see physician organizations saying that their patients are better off without the physician involvement."

The announcement was controversial with some religious groups.

"Since when should the physicians take over the responsibility of what parents should be doing?," said Michael O'Dea, founder and executive director of Christus Medicus Foundation.

The non-profit foundation provides consulting services to health plans which wish to avoid payments to physicians and hospitals for providing abortions, sterilization, contraception and other services it considers inconsistent with biblical teachings.

"Parents are the primary educators of children, not physicians or the government," O'Dea said. "This is a violation of parents rights to be the primary educator of their children."

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which represents the country's Catholic church leadership, called the recommendation "tragic."

"It is a very sad day when physicians think that "good medicine" is to attack an adolescent girl's healthy fertility with potent drugs just to prevent a possible pregnancy," said Theresa Notare, assistant director for the Conference's Natural Family Planning Program.

"This recommendation becomes tragic when we consider that the recommendation is built upon overriding a parent's rights over their own children," she said.

Whether pediatricians heed the recommendation remains to be seen.

"Some pediatricians are already doing this," said Dr. Melissa Kottke, director of The Jane Fonda Center for Adolescent Reproductive Health at Emory University and medical director for the teen services program at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta where it is common practice to provide Plan B, "a morning after pill", in an advanced fashion.

"Pediatricians who primarily take care of adolescents may already be comfortable with it but what this recommendation does is provide encouragement and support for pediatricians who take care of the full spectrum of pediatrics."

Dr. Cora Breuner, a pediatrician at Seattle Children's Hospital who led the AAP panel that produced the recommendations said pediatricians in general have preferred not to talk about emergency contraception, let alone offer advance prescriptions.

"We tend not to like bringing up stuff that's controversial," she said.

Emergency contraception for adolescents has been one of the most politically fraught areas in healthcare for almost a decade.

In 2005 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration declined to approve any over-the-counter sales of Plan B, overruling its panel of outside experts as well as its own scientists. Last December the FDA reversed that stance and moved to approve over-the-counter sales with no age limits. But Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius overruled it, ordering that for girls under 17 the pills remain available only by prescription.

The FDA subsequently denied a Citizen's Petition that would have allowed over-the-counter access to emergency contraception for women of all ages.

As a result, teenagers "face a significant barrier if they suddenly need emergency contraception at midnight on a Saturday," said Susan Wood, former assistant commissioner for women's health at the FDA. She resigned from the agency in 2005 over its Plan B decision and is now director of the Jacobs Institute of Women's Health at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

The Center for Reproductive Rights, a global legal advocacy organization devoted to reproductive rights, has filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn Sebelius' decision and welcomed the AAP recommendation.

"We are very pleased to see this recommendation because it represents progress towards our ultimate goal which is that women of all ages should have unrestricted access to emergency contraception, said Janet Crepps, senior counsel in the U.S. legal program at the Center.

Women's advocates also hailed the recommendation, saying it offers a workaround current health policy which places unnecessary hurdles in the way of young teenagers obtaining emergency contraception.

"This shames the department of Health and Human Services and its nakedly political attempt to override science and medicine," said Terry O'Neill, president of the National Organization for Women, a non-profit advocacy organization. "HHS's policy means doctors have to use this workaround, and good for them, but they shouldn't have to do it," she said.

A spokeswoman for HHS, Erin Shields Britt, declined on behalf of the department to comment.

The most common form of emergency contraception is a high dose of a regular birth-control pill such as Plan B and Plan B One-Step from Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd or Next Choice from Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. They generally sell for $10 to $80 and, although they can work as long as 120 hours after unprotected sex, are most effective in the first 24 hours.

All work by preventing ovulation, not by stopping the implantation of a fertilized egg. "These are not abortifacients," said Seattle Children's Breuner. Abortifacients are drugs or devices used to cause abortion.

GREATER USE OF EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION

A 2006-08 survey found that 14 percent of sexually experienced girls had used emergency contraception, up from 8 percent in a 2002 survey. The most common reason was condom failure, but 13 percent of the girls said it was because of rape.

A 2010 analysis of seven randomized studies of emergency contraception found that having a morning-after prescription in hand did not increase teens' sexual activity or decrease use of standard contraceptives but did increase use of the pill and shorten the time before a teenager used it after sex.

"It's just common sense that requiring a prescription is a barrier," said Bill Alpert, chief program officer of the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. "If an august and respected medical group like AAP is suggesting providing emergency contraception to minors is OK, that is a big deal."

That is especially so when teens face other obstacles to getting emergency contraception. For instance, in a 2012 study that had 17-year-olds telephone pharmacies asking about morning-after pills, only 57 percent of them correctly told the caller that she could get the drugs without a prescription.

Another barrier is that some physicians refuse to provide the prescriptions to teenagers, while others do so only in cases of rape, AAP's research shows, suggesting that the refusal "may be related to the physician's beliefs about whether it is OK for teenagers to have sex."

But pediatricians, said AAP in its policy statement, "have a duty to inform their patients about relevant, legally available treatment options," even those "to which they object."

One factor in the AAP's recommendation, which is being published in the journal "Pediatrics," is that although teen pregnancies in the United States have declined since 1991, the rate is higher than in most other developed countries.

The percent of 15- to 18-year-olds who report ever having intercourse - just over 40 percent, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - is, however, lower than in many developed countries. In other words, fewer of America's teens are having sex but more are getting pregnant.

"We think this is a big deal," Breuner said of the new recommendation. "The mothership of pediatricians has come out in favor of encouraging routine counseling and advance emergency-contraception prescriptions as one part of a public health strategy to reduce teen pregnancy."

If my toddler doesn't eat, what happens? | BabyCenter Blog

When I picked up my baby, Ieuan, from day care last Monday, he greeted me with a huge smile. ?He?s just such a happy little boy!? his nursery worker said. Then, as she does at every pick-up, she gave me feedback on his day. ?Ieuan had a good day,? she began, ?he played with building blocks, got very messy in the sand pit and ate all his food.?

Wait a minute. What?

?For breakfast, he had cereal and he ate all of that. For snack, he had apple sauce and he ate all of that. For lunch, he had spaghetti and he ate most of that!?

Sorry, what?

That was Monday. On Tuesday, same thing. And, Thursday ? the only other day he attends day care ? the report was exactly the same. 100% happy. 100% food eaten.

?I don?t get it,? my husband said, baffled. ?He never does that with us.?

Sure, Ieaun is a happy boy but, at home, he?barely?eats anything.?On Friday, he drank a few bottles of milk and ate half a bag of potato chips. That was it for the whole day!

He doesn?t look malnourished and he definitely eats ? at least, he eats on the three days he attends day care ? but is it enough? And, what will happen to him if this phase continues?

It?s no coincidence that right around the time children learn to walk? they become much less interested in food. When there?s so much to discover, who has time to eat? Plus, their growth has slowed and, no matter how active they are, their energy needs are smaller?

Rather than get hung up on the fact that your toddler has refused everything you put in front of her today, write down what she eats over the course of one week. Parents are often surprised to find that their child?s food intake balances out.?

Don?t forget to consider fluids in the food equation, too. Milk and juice can offer vital nutrients? But since too much fluid can also dampen an appetite, you may want to serve drinks after and between meals.

This description fits Ieuan (and his mom) perfectly. I give him a bottle while I rush around preparing his meal. I can?t believe it never occurred to me that this might be a mistake. And, I focus on the uneaten meals. Probably, I don?t want to think about the?day care?s successes.

Ieuan is a rambunctious toddler. It?s a phase. Just wait ?til he discovers pizza.

108 New APIs: Magisto, CloudWork and Inome

This week we had 108 new APIs added to our API directory including a video editing service, information genome platform, integration as a service platform, secure website login service and building and energy monitoring service. In addition we covered an extremely simple blogging service. Below are more details on each of these new APIs.

Archives Hub API: The Archives Hub provides a gateway to thousands of the UK?s archives. The Archives Hub enables users to search across archives held at over 220 institutions across the UK. The Archives Hub is used to find unique and often little-known sources to support research. The API uses an SRU protocol for searching the Archives Hub, descriptions of archives held across the UK.

ASIROM API: ASIROM is a Romanian car insurance company. They provide a SOAP-based API that enables users to retrieve their insurance policies and offers programmatically. This API has little documentation beyond its WSDL endpoint. The ASIROM website is provided solely in Romanian.

Australian Synchrotron API: The Australian Synchrotron is Australia?s largest national research facility. The synchrotron produces extremely bright x-rays and infrared light that can be used to study a diverse range of materials and processes in great detail.

Australian Synchrotron provides several SOAP-based APIs ? such as the MyTARDIS interface and the VBL Storage Gateway ? to view, manage, and transfer experimental data in a secure manner. Further information on these services requires user log-in or an email to the provider.

Automatton Instant Answers API: Automatton is a search engine that allows users to search for answers to their questions without being tracked. Automatton provides a free open API to access the service with not API key required. The API allows users to pass in their queries and specify the number of answers to be returned. The API uses RESTful calls and responses are formatted in JSON.

Avatarion Portrait3D API: Based on the Avatarion's Tethys 3D solution, Portraid3D allows developers to create realistic, 3D, animated avatars from image files. The avatars are web publishable through HTTP embed code or can be used in third party applications.

Depending on your desired use, pricing plans run from free (12 avatars/month) to a $1,500 ultra membership (100,000 avatars/month). Image files should ideally contain only one face with as high a resolution as possible.

The REST API creates avatars from a POST file or GET from a designated URL. Response data is formatted in JSON. An account with Mashape is required for usage of the API.

Bandpage API: Bandpage is an online platform for musicians, bands, fans, and the music industry can connect and interact. BandPage lets musicians manage their online presence by updating and sharing info, music, videos, photos, and shows online.

The Bandpage API allows developers to access and integrate the functionality of Bandpage with other applications and to create new applications. Some example API methods include managing account and band information, creating and sharing music and other files, and retrieving information about bands.

BaseKit API: BaseKit is a website creation service that provides users with their own domain and the ability to customize their site without the need for coding. Users can start with a template and then customize it by dragging and dropping text, images, and videos. For those who wish to use them, CSS and HTML5 are supported as well. BaseKit includes cloud hosting, so all of the website's hosting needs are taken care of. All of BaseKit's functionality is accessible programmatically using SOAP calls.

Bavarian Authorities Signpost API: Bayerischer Beh?rdenwegweiser (trans. Bavarian Authorities Signpost) provides an API for retrieving information on local services, living conditions, authorities, addresses, and contacts from the City Administrations within Bavaria. This API uses SOAP calls issued in XML format. The Bavarian Authorities Signpost website and API documentation are only provided in German.

Bibliotek API: Bibliotek is not a library itself, but rather a database of items held by Danish public libraries. Bibliotek provides online access to the records of all items published in Denmark as well as all items found in Danish public and research libraries. Denmark-based users can place requests for items at their local library, even if the library does not normally carry the desired item. Certain items ? such as DVDs and VHS tapes ? may be unavailable to non-local borrowers. A warning will appear in the records of any items that may be unavailable.

Bibliotek also allows users to check their loans and reservations at their favorite libraries, as well as ask for renewals and delete reservations. If the user's library doesn't yet provide their borrower data to Bibliotek, a link to the library's website will be provided instead.

Users may also search Bibliotek's item database using either a web interface or a SOAP-based API. The Bibliotek website is offered in both Danish and English, though parts of the site (including the API documentation) are provided solely in Danish.

BODC GEBCO Web Map Service API: The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) is a national facility for maintaining and distributing data concerning the marine environment. They provide several web services for implementing this data, including the GEBCO Web Map Service.

This service provides access to the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans' (GEBCO) global gridded bathymetric data set, enabling users to access geo-referenced underwater topographic maps over the internet. These can be viewed in a web browser or a geographic information system and incorporated with other web applications using REST (HTTP GET) calls.

BODC Marsden Square Translator Service API: The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) is a national facility for maintaining and distributing data concerning the marine environment. They provide several web services for implementing this data, including the Marsden Square Translator Service, which is accessible using SOAP calls. Data is returned in XML format.

Marsden Squares are a tool for expressing spatial coordinates by dividing the Earth's surface into indexed squares. They are used primarily for identifying the geographic position of meteorological and oceanographic data. The BODC Marsden Square Translator Service allows users to input a list of Marsden Square references and calculate the geographical coordinates of the rectangular bounding box enclosing them.

BODC NERC Vocabulary Server API: The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) is a national facility for maintaining and distributing data concerning the marine environment. It provides several web services for implementing this data, including the NERC Vocabulary Server. The Vocabulary Server provides access to lists of standard terms used for oceanographic metadata, including descriptions of data, platforms, instruments, and geographic locations.

Using standardized sets of terms solves the problem of ambiguities associated with data markup and also enables records to be interpreted by computers. This opens up possibilities for computer aided manipulation, distribution, and long-term reuse. The BODC NERC Vocabulary Server can be accessed programmatically using SOAP calls issued in XML format.

CampusLink API: The service provides operational support for the activities of colleges, schools, and other educational institutions. Specific services include custom online admissions forms for new student recruitment and integration of current student record databases and learning management systems (LMSs) such as Blackboard and Moodle for delivery of curriculum. Merchant services support operation of a school bookstore and other direct selling activities.

API methods support creation of applications for student interactions, such as inquiries and applications for admissions and financial aid, with review workflows to process submissions. Methods also support interactions with current students such as student record updates, integration with LMS curriculum management, and ad hoc communications via online chat and phone response.

cashU API: cashU is an online payment service provider that focuses on serving the Middle East and North Africa. They provide global and regional online merchants with a suite of payment solutions designed to cater to the local culture and to Arabic online buying habits. Today, cashU serves online shoppers in all Arabic-speaking and surrounding countries, giving people the opportunity to buy online regardless of age, income, nationality, or banking contacts.

cashU is built on and around sophisticated, up-to-date fraud prevention and AML systems, reducing the risks associated with online payments for both buyers and sellers. cashU's online payment services can be accessed programmatically using SOAP calls issued in XML format.

CG General Store Auto 3D Head API: CG General Store sells time saving products to 3D computer graphics professionals and students. These products include High Dynamic Range (HDR) Panoramas, Automated 3D Head Reconstruction, Maya-rigged 3D heads and other 3D models.

The Auto 3D Head API is a neural net based 3D Reconstruction REST API. Users can submit one or more photos of a person and retrieve a 3D animation rigged, photo-real 3D Avatar of that person. The API also does facial photo analysis such as "find face" and recovering skin, hair, and eye colors.

The system has three different geometry targets, and can be trained to output proprietary geometries as well. Also generates skin tone color corrected full body texture maps, so avatars complete bodies match their real world ethnicity. Great for gaming Apps as well as fashion and eCommerce: incorporate user's likeness in the product catalog, and show the consumer experiencing the product and enjoying. System is fast, under a second to generate a new avatar, plus data transfer time from our big fat pipe. The actual API endpoints are private. Cloud CMS provides one-click infrastructure for all of the needs of our mobile and web applications. This includes Enterprise Content Management services like workflow, auditing, content lifecycle management, mimetype transformations and extractions and more.

Available calls include friend list access, message updates, user data requests, and adding and retrieving photos. Responses are JSON formatted.

DaWanda API: DaWanda is an international, online sales market with a massive collection of handcrafted, hard to find and unique products. Dawanda's market offerings are collected from all over the world with an international focus. You can share your collections with friends and "like" products, publishing wish lists if you choose to. As a seller, you have control over your online marketplace with the ability to create coupon codes and personalized introductions, your own shipping policies and shop terms.

There are currently two APIs (OAuth, Basic) that let you access different information. The Basic, REST API uses GET calls to return information about shops, public user profiles, products and categories. The OAuth API allows access to more sensitive information: User name, address, gender, order items.

dogado Providerbox API: Providerbox offers a unified web-based administration platform for those who wish to offer web hosting services to their customers. Providerbox was designed to be easy to use, requiring neither programming skills nor graphic design experience. After receiving their login credentials, users can thoroughly customize the hosting service, rebranding it to reflect their business's identity.

Visitors to your website are now afforded the opportunity to see the prices being offered over the Internet for your product catalog.

The Ecato API uses a simple REST interface with GET calls and JSON and XML data formats. You can return lists of: categories, reviews and product details (top product, prices, rating, user votes). The API is available to all Ecato users regardless of pricing tier.

Ei3 API: Ei3's Internet applications are used by manufacturers to gather, processes and analyze large amounts of machine data. Users are provided with mobile apps, web pages, dashboards and reports that show key performance indicators describing the performance, uptime and quality of machine output. Actionable information about machine production becomes even more valuable when it is integrated fully into the enterprise. But in traditional implementations there are many technical challenges that make this a daunting task for many companies. Ei3?s Web Service solves this by providing tools that link shop-floor data into ERP, Quality and other enterprise computing platforms.

The API allows clients to communicate with Ei3's cloud servers in order to access information about specific machines. The API uses RESTful calls and responses are formatted in XML and JSON.

EnClout Content API: EnClout is interested in bringing data together from multiple sources and solve the data silo for businesses. EnClout provides a suite of domain related APIs. The Content API provides basic web site content analysis for a given domain. It extracts category, Language, URL, redirect URL, meta_keywords, meta_description, company, phone and email information in JSON, XML or HTML format.

EnClout DMOZ API: EnClout is interested in bringing data together from multiple sources and solve the data silo for businesses. EnClout provides a suite of domain related APIs. This API extracts a DMOZ category for a given domain. Results are returned in XML, JSON and HTML.

EnClout DNS API: EnClout is interested in bringing data together from multiple sources and solve the data silo for businesses. EnClout provides a suite of domain related APIs. The DNS API takes a URL or domain as input and returns parsed DNS records in JSON, XML or HTML format.

EnClout Whois API: EnClout is interested in bringing data together from multiple sources and solve the data silo for businesses. EnClout provides a suite of domain related APIs. The Whois API takes a URL or domain as input and provides parsed whois records in JSON, XML or HTML format.

Epistlee API: Epistlee is a blogging application that provides simple blogs. Bloggers can set up and manage their blogs with Epistlee.

The Epistlee API allows developers to access and integrate the functionality of Epistlee with other applications. Some example API methods include creating a blog, managing blogs, and creating and updating blog entries.

ERMAHGERD Translator API: The ERMAHGERD Translator API changes regular English phrases, words or sentences into the meme-speak of the Ermahgerd meme.

The REST based service with JSON returns is hosted by Mashape and requires an account with the service. Up to 10 daily translations are free, after that you can purchase a basic account for $5.00/month that provides 1.000 daily translations.

Field Nation API: Field Nation is a leading U.S. provider of independent field service technicians to the computer service industry. They provide a self service portal that allows customers to source technicians themselves according to the skills they need for a specific job. Services are paid for up front by funding the account from which Field Nation pays its technicians.

Use the SOAP-based Field Nation API to interact with the site programmatically. It can be used to look up technicians, check messages, check costs, monitor work order progress, get company documents, etc.

FinancialForce Accounting API: The service provides a hosted platform for configurable, standards-compliant financial accounting functions with capabilities for integration with Salesforce. Configuration options allow designation of custom datatypes suited to specific needs. Context groupings gather financial data related to specific companies or other organizational units.

API methods support standard accounting functions such as defining a chart of accounts and posting accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions. General ledger and journal entries accommodate sales and purchases, invoicing and payment processing, and all related accounting activities.

Foodini API: Foodini.pl is a Polish grocery shopping service that allows customers to order their shopping lists online and have everything delivered directly to their homes. Groceries are carefully packed and delivered in specialized vehicles equipped with refrigeration units. Registered customers can create saved shopping lists and define any number of favorite products. Foodini.pl offers frequent promotions and a loyalty program to make shopping more affordable.

The SOAP-based Foodini.pl API enables users to access the website's services programmatically and integrate them with other systems and services. The Foodini.pl website is offered solely in Polish.

GG.com Tipzone Pro API: GG.com is an online community for horse racing enthusiasts. Tipzone Pro provides professional tipsters with proofing service and collects professional tipster information for GG.com users. The GG.com Tipzone Pro SOAP API allows tipsters to automate their selections.

GoFax Fax API: GoFax is focused on provided solutions for internet fax and SMS services through email. A range of services are offered from Fax and SMS integration through APIs, email to fax sending, fax to email receiving and email to SMS sending.

The GoFax Fax API allows you to streamline your business's faxing needs and automate the faxing process. Through the API, developers have access to GoFax's business grade ISDN fax network and reporting logs.

The SOAP based API provides functionality for: sending fax documents, checking sent and cancelled faxes, resending of faxes, querying the legal types, checking your queue position, managing login access and more.

Granica API: Granica is a Polish government website that provides information useful to people crossing the border into or out of Poland. Granica offers two APIs, both of which make use of SOAP calls. One provides users with information on waiting times at the border. The other allows foreign shoppers to calculate the VAT (Value-Added Tax) or GST (Goods and Services Tax) they paid while shopping in Poland so that they can be reimbursed.

H-InvDB API: The service provides access to the H-Invitational Database (H-InvDB) of human genes and genetic structure. The database documents research analyzine all human gene transcripts with annotations from the service provider describing genetic structures, observed variants, and highly detailed interactions of genetic sequences and processes.

API methods support search against the database by individual gene identifier, keywords in description text, location on on a particular chromosome or in relation to other genes, and more. Methods

Methods allow retrieval of cumulative influence statistics, or altmetrics, by combining data about the work from a number of tracking services. Methods also support grouping of related individual works into collections to be tracked as a whole.

innovaphone PBX API: The service provides a hosted platform for voice-over-IP (VoIP) telephone communications. It interacts with network hardware like private branch exchange (PBX) devices to route telephony traffic using inexpensive internet protocol connections while preserving call quality and flexible, scalable configurations.

API methods support designation of calling groups and devices within a network along with device configuration and routing of calls. Methods manage descriptive information such as recipient description, calling number, time of call, etc. Methods also support designation of availability to receive calls, reasons for unavailability, and handling of voice mail messages.

inome exchange API: Inome is a platform that looks to make information person-centric. Their INXSearch binds a users to a corresponding profile in inome and returns enriched user information. Developers can use the API to create applications built on information genomes that help people connect with each other, control their publicly available information, and make informed decisions. The API uses RESTful calls and responses are formatted in XML and JSON.

instantPay.in API: instantPay.in is a provider of anytime, anywhere access to users' day to day Mobile & Data Card Top-ups, DTH Recharges and Utility Bill Payments via easy to integrate API. The API is compatible on all platforms. Interested developers can contact the provider for information about partnerships and API documentation.

IRESS API: IRESS is an international supplier of share market and wealth management systems. They provide an equity information and trading platform along with an extensive suite of financial planning tools. IRESS clients vary and can range from large corporations to independent operators.

The SOAP-based IRESS API provides access to market data, order, and portfolio systems, enabling clients to integrate IRESS with their existing solutions.

ITRP API: ITRP is an enterprise-level cloud-based IT service management application service. In addition to providing user interfaces for service desk analysts and IT specialists, ITRP manages service agreements and facilitates collaboration between IT departments and external service providers.

Joinup API: Joinup is a collaborative platform created by the European Commission that offers a set of services to help e-Government professionals share their experiences with interoperability solutions. The goal is to help such professionals find, choose, re-use, develop, and implement open source software and semantic interoperability assets. Information stored on the platform can be accessed and managed programmatically using Joinup's SOAP-based APIs.

Kompoz API: Kompoz is an online, free, music collaboration service. It allows users to upload music tracks to the community and invite other Kompoz users to add to the track (guitars, vocals, effects and more). Users also have an individual forum for their account where you can share ideas, suggestions and more with the public community about your music.

By targeting contextual classifications at the page level, the service seeks to help advertisers identify individual pages of interest to their prospective customers rather than choosing overall websites, which may cover a range of topics.

API methods support submission of a page URL to be classified. The API returns content parameters, including length and time to load, along with up to five contextual "channels" where the content fits best.
