Question by : can you have rheumatoid arthritis without it showing up in blood work?
I have rheumatoid arthritis like symptoms, but have a lot of blood work and nothing shows up. Is it possible it not be in the blood. It hasn?t been a year yet, it started about June or July sometime around there. I am 14 if that means anything. I have also been diagnosed with fabry disease, both clinically and genetically.

This is what Fatherhood Means

Frightfully bad form to put another piece on the front page when an earlier one is still there, but I do have to tell you what I have been up to for the last few hours. Please forgive me.

My youngest came back from school saying his housemaster had said any boy whose shoes were not perfectly clean tomorrow would be kept in for an hour. I rose to the occasion. I have devoted several hours to polishing his shoes (and his older brother?s even though the older boy?s housemaster is not so obsessive).

I remember a family friend (he was quite a distinguished Tory MP) telling me about how he used to creep up to his 23 year old son?s bedroom late at night, find his shoes and then polish them. He was convinced the lad would never succeed as a barrister unless his shoes were very shiny. The boy is now a very successful QC.

I may not be very good at the maths homework, but I can polish shoes.

I recently had lunch with a client from the UK and the subject turned to the ways American companies hire white collar employees. ?As I detailed the process he could not believe what he was hearing and said ?no wonder so many businesses are in trouble here in the states?. ?The game that some executive recruiters and HR people play has not changed that much in the last 20 years and for many job seekers it?s like going through a maze towards the reward at the other end.

It used to be that when you learned of an opening at a company you wanted to work for you would send your resume with a cover letter and wait for a response. ?There was a time when most companies would at least have the courtesy to respond but those days are long gone. ?Now you still send your resume but it usually goes into the black hole of not hearing a damn thing back from anyone.

If you?re lucky to get a response there is usually a phone interview with an HR person that can last anywhere from a few minutes to a half hour before you are either asked to come in and meet the hiring manager or have another phone call with the hiring manager. ? Even if you do well with both the HR and hiring manager you still need to come in and meet a lot of other people anyone of which can cancel your candidacy because of a check box even though you?re not going to be working directly with that person.

This whole process can last weeks and even months. ?One client I am working with said that they are trying to hire a Director of Social Media but the process has gone on for over 2 months and the candidate in question, because of the long period of time, has accepted a position with another company. ?He was puzzled why he had to start the whole process over again.

To every HR person and executive recruiter here are some things that you should be doing out of good business sense and decency:

(1) Acknowledge when someone applies for a job with your company. Even if it?s an auto responder to say ?we have received your resume?. ?If you don?t have the time to respond than the hell with you too.

(2) Don?t yank candidates chains. ?If you know that the candidate you?re interviewing is not a good fit tell them honestly and openly don?t say things like ?we?ll get back to ?you? because believe it or not some people still believe that shit.

(3) Don?t low ball us. ?Don?t offer a managers job to someone who used to be a VP if their resume indicates that they are a senior level executive. ?That is demeaning and you should know better.

(4) Treat candidates with common courtesy and respect not like you?re doing us a favor by talking to us.

(5) If you run across a marketing Linchpin and innovator do whatever you can to get them in front of decision makers ASAP. ?Believe me these people are hard to come by and your company needs them badly.

(6) Be clear about the hiring process and timeline. ?Don?t tell a candidate that they will hear back on a certain date and then not get back to them. A simple eMail sometimes is all it takes to say ?sorry for the delay, we are still trying to get people lined up for your interviews?.

(7) The most important person who should make the ultimate decision as to whether to hire the person should be the hiring manager. ?Don?t let outsiders within your organization bring a candidate down because they didn?t like her,him . ?They are not the ones who need the results you are.

(8) There are some really great executive recruiters but for every good one there are 4 bad ones. ?These are people who try and put you in a position that you may not be right for and as soon as you?re out of contention for the job they drop you like a hot rock.

It?s a shame that American companies treat candidates this way but right now they have no incentive to treat them better because after all in their minds it?s a buyers market. ?These are companies that you don?t want to work for and you should avoid them at all costs because it says a lot about how they treat and value their people.

Syria assails rebel town, admits sanctions hurting

Syrian forces tried to storm the rebel bastion of Rastan Wednesday under cover of heavy gunfire, shelling and rocket bombardment, reports said, as Damascus admitted sanctions were biting hard.

The rebel Free Syrian Army, meanwhile, denied it was behind the kidnapping of Lebanese Shiite pilgrims in the north, an incident adding to tensions in neighbouring Lebanon which is already divided between pro- and anti-Damascus camps.

There was no word on any Rastan casualties, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 12 people were killed nationwide, including seven troops shot dead at Qalamun in Damascus province as they tried to defect to the rebellion.

Soldiers were trying to overrun Rastan for the second time in 10 days, with shells crashing into the town at the rate of "one a minute" at one stage, according to the Britain-based watchdog.

An activist told AFP that Free Syrian Army fighters were defending Rastan's entrances but that "regime forces are being strengthened with new deployments," including from the elite Republican Guard.

"Electricity has been cut off in Rastan, and water tanks have been shelled," said activist Abu Rawan. "There is also a severe lack of food because the market is closed and we can't bring food in from nearby villages."

Hours later, the activist said the army assault eased when a team of UN observers entered Rastan.

"The situation is calm now because the UN monitors have arrived" having heard the shelling, Abu Rawan told AFP, adding, however, "God protect us when they leave."

On May 14, 23 soldiers were killed in a failed assault on the town, which straddles the main highway linking the capital to the north and where rebels regrouped from the battered city of Homs.

Elsewhere, troops fired on protesters in Syria's second city Aleppo as about 1,500 people rallied against the regime, triggering armed clashes, said the Observatory, without providing any details on casualties.

Activists said lawyers and sympathisers with the revolt staged a sit-in at Aleppo's judicial complex to demand the release of political prisoners, as well as pay tribute to four students killed at a May 3 rally in the northern city.

The uprising against President Bashar al-Assad broke out with peaceful democracy protests in March 2011, prompting a fierce crackdown.

More than 12,600 people have been killed in the bloodshed, nearly 1,500 of them since a UN-backed truce took effect April 12, according to Observatory figures.

The bloodshed has persisted despite the ceasefire brokered by UN and Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, as well as previous diplomatic measures including several rounds of sanctions against Assad's regime.

Oil Minister Sufian Allaw admitted on Wednesday that punitive measures imposed by the West have cost Syria almost $4 billion and caused shortages in fuel products.

"The oil sector has lost almost $4 billion because of the unjust European and US sanctions, blocking exports and imports of oil and oil derivatives," he told a news conference.

The minister acknowledged "new difficulties" in meeting Syria's energy needs, especially for domestic gas.

"The measures taken by the EU and United States are behind this crisis. They want to put pressure on the Syrian people by widening the embargo," he said, adding: "We will also overcome the new difficulties."

Allaw said negotiations were under way with Russia for a long-term energy deal, while a Venezuelan vessel loaded with 35,000 tonnes of fuel oil docked in Syria this week and another was expected shortly.

The raging violence took a broader turn in the region after Lebanon's state news agency said Syrian rebels kidnapped 13 Lebanese Shiite Muslims as they were headed home by bus from a pilgrimage in Iran.

Lebanese Foreign Minister Adnan Mansur said the pilgrims were abducted by "a splinter group of the armed Syrian opposition", but added he expected their release "within hours."

The Free Syrian Army strongly denied involvement.

"The FSA is not at all responsible for the operation," Mustafa al-Sheikh, a high-ranking member of the rebel force, told AFP by telephone from Istanbul.

"This is an attempt to distort the image of the FSA," said Sheikh, the head of the group's military council. The kidnapping was "no doubt the work of the regime, which wants to sow chaos."

The opposition Syrian National Council also issued a call for the prompt release of the pilgrims, adding it too believed the regime could be involved in the kidnapping.

But Lebanese women pilgrims who arrived in Beirut on Wednesday said the kidnappers presented themselves as members of FSA. "They terrorised us," said one of them.

The case has triggered fears of sectarian tensions in Lebanon over the Syrian conflict.

Russia warned on Wednesday of the Syrian conflict spilling over into Lebanon, calling on all parties to avoid fresh unrest at all costs.

Similarly, Saudi King Abdullah has warned of "the gravity of the crisis and its potential to escalate into a sectarian conflict in Lebanon, dragging it back into the spectre of civil war."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Broadcast television networks are determined to make you laugh.

The resurgence of situation comedies is the clearest trend to emerge from TV's helter-skelter week of fall schedule announcements that just concluded. ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC will have 30 half-hour comedies on the air at the beginning of next season ? 32 by November ? compared to 17 at the opening of a new season five years ago.

Tuesday alone is a comic festival. The top networks will air eight sitcoms that night alone, with ABC promising two more in January.

"The audience is really open to comedy right now," said Robert Greenblatt, NBC entertainment chief. The network made comedy its development priority, and is opening Tuesday and Friday to sitcoms next fall. NBC is also keeping four comedies on Thursday night, despite abysmal ratings.

The explanation is as much financial as cultural, and there's a clear starting point.

Much as "The Cosby Show" was responsible for resurrecting sitcoms in the 1980s, ABC's "Modern Family" played the same role this time. It was an instant critical hit when it premiered in 2009 and has grown to become ABC's most popular scripted program. ABC Entertainment Group President Paul Lee called it "the defining comedy of our time."

"I don't think the networks gave up on (comedy)," said Brad Adgate, television analyst for Horizon Media. "There's too much of a financial incentive to go with comedies. They were always trying. But they weren't that good."

The lesson for Fox coming out of this season was clear. The charming "New Girl" with Zooey Deschanel did well and was invited back for a new season; the special-effects laden drama "Terra Nova" was an expensive bust. Fox is building a four-sitcom night on Tuesdays led by "New Girl."

It also can't be lost on struggling NBC that it can invest in a complex drama like "Awake," get good reviews and virtually no viewers. NBC's fall schedule shows its drought in developing solid dramas: There's no show that premiered between 1999 ("Law & Order: SVU") and 2010 ("Parenthood").

Many fans express on social media that they're reluctant to commit to new dramas on broadcast networks for fear they will be quickly cancelled, said Sean Reckwerdt, TV analyst and cultural anthropologist for Networked Insights. CBS is the exception, he said.

Comedies, meanwhile, generally require less investment both personally and financially and the upside in success can be huge.

The slump in new comedy development during the mid-2000s meant there were fewer sitcoms available on the syndication market at precisely the time there was more interest in buying them. "The Big Bang Theory" and "Modern Family" commanded prices at or near $1.5 million an episode for their makers when they were sold in syndication less than two years ago.

Reruns of "The Big Bang Theory" have been such a big success for TBS since they started last fall that the network's viewership is up more than 11 percent over last year, the Nielsen company said.

Demand is such that "2 Broke Girls" and "Mike & Molly" will soon hit the syndication market, even though CBS has made nowhere near the 100 episodes of the shows that is generally considered a benchmark for running repeats, said Bill Carroll, an expert on the syndication market for Katz Media. A classic sitcom can generate money for a long time; somewhere "I Love Lucy" and "M-A-S-H" episodes are still being shown.

"Not every show is like that, but certainly the blue chip players last forever," Carroll said. "They'll be running when we watch TV on our watches or watch on our glasses."

USA won the rights to begin airing "Modern Family" reruns next year and the network, which has made its fortune in large part through successful original dramas, made the upcoming comedy repeats a centerpiece of its presentation to advertisers this past week.

Syndication success also creates an interesting boomerang effect for networks. Ratings for original episodes of "The Big Bang Theory" and "How I Met Your Mother" on CBS went up this year ? unusual for series that have been on the air so long ? because more viewers became familiar with the characters through reruns.

It was instantly evident when ABC previewed "Modern Family" for advertisers three years ago that the comedy was something special. None of this year's crop jumps out in the same way. Fox is getting some buzz for a sitcom created by and starring Mindy Kaling of "The Office," and the network's "Ben and Kate" seems sweet. NBC has high hopes for Matthew Perry's "Go On" because of the way he channels Chandler from "Friends."

Among the most promising dramas is ABC's "Nashville," with Connie Britton of "Friday Night Lights" in a career and love triangle. There are a handful of creepy dramas, often with supernatural elements, with the best looking like Fox's "The Following," with Kevin Bacon trying to track down a serial killer. That doesn't start until midseason, however.

As it has for a few years now, CBS appears in a different league than its rivals. Its margin of victory as the first-place network was the widest it has been in 23 years, and the network has no intention of messing with a successful formula. Its three new fall dramas are each criminal or legal procedurals.

CBS may eventually pay for taking "thinner and thinner slices of the same stuff," Reckwerdt noted. Judging by the warm response by advertisers to its new shows, that day of reckoning doesn't appear imminent.

Jimmy Kimmel, who has appeared for 10 straight years at ABC's presentation to lob some verbal grenades at network executives, neatly summed up the leap of faith that TV executives are asking of advertisers.

"We're going to show you some shows that either we're excited about or pretending to be excited about," he said.

"It's up to you to figure out which is which."

Travel insurance used to be a small segment of the insurance business that protected people against the loss of a non-refundable deposit on a big-ticket vacation such as a safari or a round-the-world cruise. But the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and a series of natural disasters in the early 2000s pushed it into the mainstream. Today, it?s hard to find a travel agent or travel site that doesn?t try to sell an optional insurance policy as part of a trip.

But should you buy one? That depends. Here are the most frequently asked questions about travel insurance:

What does travel insurance do?

Travel insurance covers the investment in your travel plans, your personal belongings, and you and your family on your vacation. If something goes wrong, you can recover some or all of your costs, depending on the kind of insurance you buy. Most policies cover trip interruptions and cancellations and even acts of terrorism. They can also pay for emergency medical and dental care and, if necessary, a medical evacuation.

What kinds of policies are out there?

There are two major types of travel insurance: wholesale plans and comprehensive packages. Wholesale plans are sold through travel suppliers like a cruise company or your airline. They typically have more limitations in coverage, and are not age-sensitive in their pricing. You can?t compare these plans because they are customized and priced for each travel supplier. Travel agents and online websites sell comprehensive packaged plans, mostly. These are priced and configured exactly the same no matter whom you buy from. A comprehensive travel insurance policy lets you cancel your trip for a covered reason and has specific limitations; the most frequent ?gotcha? is an exclusion for any preexisting medical conditions. A ?cancel for any reason? option in a policy pays for a percentage of your non-refundable trip costs if you decide to stay home.

How much does insurance cost?

A standard policy typically costs 4 to 8 percent of your trip?s prepaid, non-refundable price. A ?cancel for any reason? policy, however, can run you 10 percent or slightly more. Policies are priced based on the length of the vacation, the age of the travelers, the total cost of the trip, and the coverage features included in the plan.

Do I need insurance?

Maybe. Experts recommend it if you are concerned about losing a large non-refundable vacation deposit, or non-refundable airfare. Also consider a policy if you?re cruising or taking a package tour. (Both have unforgiving cancellation policies, which could result in your losing the entire value of your trip.) Medicare, and most health insurance policies don?t cover you outside the country. More importantly, medical evacuation expense is a critical coverage that can help get you home or to a hospital that can treat you. You need to weigh the additional cost of the insurance against the risks of making a claim.

Where can I buy insurance?

You can buy directly from your travel supplier or your travel agent. In both of these cases, you will have trouble comparing plans or coverage verses cost because they typically only offer one or two brands, and rarely give you an easy way to compare coverage. You can buy directly through the insurance companies on their websites. The largest are Allianz Global Assistance (formerly Access America), CSA Travel Protection and Travel Guard. You can also buy through a third-party comparison web site such as Squaremouth, Travel Insurance Review, TripInsuranceStore.com and InsureMyTrip.com. Those sites sell the same products you buy directly from the insurance company or your travel agent, but make it easier to compare policies. A new comparison website, TripInsurance.com, sells exclusive policies directly from the major underwriters, eliminating several layers of middlemen.

How do I shop for a policy?

Get a quote from your travel agent, and specifically ask them the brand and name of the policy. Get a list of the coverage levels in the plan they are suggesting. Check a comparison website to see if you can find the same coverage for less money in a different company?s policy. Look for a policy with a pre-existing conditions waiver. Make sure the comparison website is licensed to sell insurance in your state. If they are, then they will only be offering legitimate policies from insurance companies licensed in your state.

If you are buying from a travel supplier, make sure a licensed insurance provider provides their insurance. If you have a question about a policy or provider, check the US Travel Insurance Association site or your state insurance commissioner to make sure that it?s legit. Make sure you read the actual certificate of coverage for the particular areas of coverage you are concerned about to see what their exclusions are. The devil is in the fine print.

What do I do after buying?

Read the policy immediately. If you see a problem in a coverage area of concern, call your insurance company right away. Every policy offers a 10-day ?free look? period. If after reviewing the policy, you decide that it doesn?t meet your needs, you can cancel it and get a full refund as long as you haven?t left on your trip or filed any claims.

What if I have to file a claim?

Your travel insurance company will tell you how to do that in the policy certificate. Documentation of your loss is the most important item you?ll need to pull together. If you don?t have a pre-existing conditions waiver, your insurance company may have to request your medical records. Claims typically take two to four weeks to process, but some complicated ones can take longer. Expect a final decision within roughly a month.

What if my claim is rejected?

A rejection means the company can?t honor your claim based on the information provided, and the provisions of your plan. Ask the company for the specific provisions of the plan, and what is missing in your documentation that cause them to come to this decision. Insurance claims are highly regulated, and the decisions are not arbitrary. They follow the policy provisions and evaluate your claim information on their face value. Send the company a brief, polite written appeal with any new information you believe is relevant to your case. Most insurance companies have their most senior adjusters and management review appeals.

If my appeal is rejected, am I out of luck?

Again, ask the insurance company for the specific reasons for rejection of your claim. Discuss the policy and their rejection reasons with your attorney before you make a claim in court. If an attorney thinks you have a case, you?ll want to start in small claims court. Asking your travel agent or comparison website to intervene will rarely help, but it can. (They are not qualified or authorized to interpret policy provisions.) If you suspect insurance fraud you can contact your state insurance commissioner. Before they take action, they will want to see all the documentation on how your claim was handled.
