BlackBerry squeezed, RIM searches for options

Analysts were tripping over each other Friday to lower their price targets for Research In Motion (RIM) after the BlackBerry manufacturer's? fourth-quarter loss didn't even reach Wall Street's lowered expectations.

"Results are going to deteriorate much further over the next couple of quarters,"?Will Power, senior analyst at Robert W. Baird & Co. told CNBC on Friday.?

With long-promised touchscreen handsets still months away from availability, executives at the former smartphone leader must decide if entering into a licensing deal will make up the shortfall.

New CEO Thorsten Heins said the company is considering any and all options on the table, including partnerships,?an outright sale or?a licensing pact, which analysts think?is the most likely prospect.

"We see a licensing deal announced within the next 3 months," Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said in a recent research note, predicting a 90 percent probability that such a deal would take place. Samsung and HTC, both of which now rely heavily on Android devices, might welcome a competing platform, he suggested.

Licensing, though, would "devastate the hardware business" for RIM, Misek noted, which is the last thing the Waterloo, Ontario-based company?needs. RIM is pinning its hopes on the release of BlackBerry 10, but Power said a dearth of third-party apps will make competing with Apple, Google and even Microsoft challenging.?

Without?a cool touchscreen device to keep customers from defecting, the company has been slashing prices on its existing handsets.?It still hasn't been able to?boost sales.

On Thursday, RIM reported a net loss of $125 million, or 24 cents a share, in the fourth quarter after booking writedowns on its legacy BlackBerry 7 phones and goodwill.

RIM last recorded a loss under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005, when it booked tax expenses and paid to resolve a patent infringement case that had threatened to shut down its U.S. operations.

On an adjusted basis excluding the writedowns, profit in the latest quarter more than halved to $418 million, or 80 cents a share, from $934 million, or $1.78, a year earlier. Revenue slumped to $4.19 billion from $5.56 billion.

Analysts, on average, had expected RIM to earn 81 cents a share on revenue of $4.54 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Excluding several major writedowns, RIM had adjusted earnings of $4.20 per share in the full fiscal year, after forecasting a year ago it would earn more than $7.50 a share.?

"Of even more concern, RIM took a $267 million inventory charge on its BlackBerry 7 sales only six months after that product family?s introduction, reflecting very poor demand," Simona Jankowski, Goldman Sachs analyst, wrote in a recent note.?

RIM's solution appears to be a re-emphasis on the corporate market and reducing its focus on consumers.

Although Apple has trounced RIM in the consumer market,?analysts aren't sure that backing away from consumers is a good strategy;?Apple has begun making inroads in the business market, too. Barclays Capital's Jeff Kvaal expressed reservations in a research note, pointing out that more companies today let employees use their own smartphones rather than issuing BlackBerries for corporate use. "We would have preferred RIM emphasize consumer," he wrote.

"The history of wireless is littered with OEMs that had significant product cycle/share gains, but then missed structural market shifts," Jim Suva, a Citigroup analyst, wrote.

With this many challenges facing RIM, Misek said licensing looks like an increasingly appealing choice. Its executives will have a hard time getting favorable terms, though, given the magnitude of its struggles and open expressions of doubt about the company's future from the investment community. "We see this as a good option for RIM but think the changing tactics and RIM's continued poor performance will weaken its negotiating position," he wrote.?

At least 3 humans?

Yesterday was a typical day. You went to work or school... or just lazed around the house, or did whatever you usually do. There had been no warning or sign that anything would change. There had been no impending apocalyptic predictions, well at least not till the end of the year.

And yet...

6,840,507,003 people, roughly the world's population, had vanished over night. Not died. There was no huge battle for the souls of the masses. No corps left to signify that there had been so many people. No zombies, no asteroid, no aliens, nothing. Only the buildings remained and all life vanished.

And somehow, you are still here.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It had been a glitch in the system that had caused this. The artificial beings that were called humans were very few in number, not that they knew such. They were kept in the Box, a high-tech simulator. The four were raised from infancy very carefully. They were supposed to die in there, never learning of the truth. Unfortunately this changed everything.
The idea was to create a new race, similar to our own, but without powers. There were many reasons for this. Mainly though, we hoped to delude the seemingly ever growing powers of our own people. It sounds strange doesn't it? That we would hope to cripple our own strengths. It was tragic, but our powers would only lead to our demise. With each generation the powers grew and it had almost become a race. Families struggled to find others of power, secure an heir who would be stronger than all others, and the final goal was to rule the world. Of course no one openly spoke of such, but it was obviously happening. Which is why the Box was constructed, why the humans were made.
Unfortunately with this glitch, we can't continue testing the humans within the Box. We have no clue how they'll react to their entire world being a lie. Worse yet, we have no way of knowing how they will genetically react to us.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So this is where we, the humans, begin. Our world is empty and a strange voice calls us as if through a PA system to meet with each-other...

Human 1 - Zeth Trigger - 21 - American - Male (Miikii)

Human 2 -

Human 3 -

Human 4 -

Crete (Our creators)

Crete 1 - the one charged with observing the humans, s/he isn't particularly powerful. Is also trying to guide them out of the Box.

Crete 2 - Random member of Crete society (SlightlyInsane)

Crete 3 - Head of one of the stronger houses of power. Seeking a proper mate to strengthen his/her own powers against the other houses.

Crete 4 - Member of one of the stronger houses of power. Seeking a proper mate to strengthen his/her own powers against the other houses.

Crete 5 - Member of one of the stronger houses of power. Seeking a proper mate to strengthen his/her own powers against the other houses.

Things to note:

Crete 3, 4, and 5 are not from the same house.

Humans are artificial, genetically engineered beings.
We look normal.
We have no powers.

>yet< Due to our genetic similarities, but lack of the key structure of the Crete's own genetics that give them a single stable power, humans can mimic the Crete's power or amplify it. The humans will have to learn how on their own however, and will not be proficient to start.

The race that created us, look a lot like us. The exceptions being:
1. Powers, which are passed down through DNA, vary from person to person and are slightly unpredictable when mixed. A power can be anything from heightened senses to elemental control, flight and more. But each Crete only posses 1.
2. Odd coloration. Be it their skin tone, eye color, hair color, or something else. This appearance is strangely not genetic and changes greatly even from parent to child.

Construction-led improvement in NZ business confidence ...

The construction industry is leading business confidence higher in the latest National Bank Business Outlook survey, reflecting expectations of the Christchurch rebuild kicking into life.

However, the bank?s chief economist Cameron Bagrie warns the improving sentiment is not occurring throughout the economy, with export commodity prices still weakening and the government?s belt-tightening keeping consumers? wallets locked away.

Nonetheless, a net 34 percent of businesses expect better times in the year ahead, up six percentage points from the February survey, and sentiment is even stronger when firms are asked what they expect for their own businesses.

A net 39 percent of the 421 firms nationwide which responded to the monthly survey say the year ahead looks better for their own enterprise, up eight points on last month to a 7-month high.

Employment, investment and profit expectations were also on the rise, although Bagrie warned there could be an element of current optimism being based on the expectation that ?it surely can?t get any worse??

?The process of balance sheet repair has further to run. Commodity prices are easing. Tighter fiscal policy will take more money out of our pockets than we get back,? he said, but there were rays of sunshine among the challenges with agricultural output up strongly after a good growing season, higher property prices and ?a lot? of improvement in the global economy, at least for now.

The latest survey showed New Zealand was ?moving in the right direction, but with a sting in the tail,? said Bagrie. ?Improvements are being led by housing and construction. It?s growth, so we?ll take it, but with the current account deficit at 4 percent of gross domestic product and net external liability position at 72 percent of GDP, the housing market can only get us so far.?

Wacom Intuos5 PTH650

The Wacom Intuos5 ($349 direct) continues the company's tradition of delivering quality drawing tablets at reasonable prices. The Intuos5 is a modest step up from the successful Intuos4 (4 stars), refining the design and adding multitouch gestures. But the basic concept?and execution?remain the same. Whether you're a professional illustrator, photography enthusiast, or an amateur cartoonist, this is the midrange tablet to get and a clear Editors' Choice winner.

Design, Pen, and Setup
For this review, we tested the PTH650 (Medium) version, which retails for $349; Wacom also sells the smaller PTH450 ($229) and the larger PTH850 ($469). The PTH650 measures 9.9 by 15 by 0.5 inches (HWD), with a 8.8 by 5.5 inch (HWD) drawing area, and weighs 2.2 pounds. Like prior Intuos tablets, the Intuos5 is made of black plastic, but this one features a sleeker, slightly rubberized border instead of a hard plastic one. The usual nicely textured hard plastic drawing surface remains intact. Along the left are eight recessed, programmable ExpressKeys as before (albeit with a different labeling scheme?more on that later). There's also a circular control pad you can configure for auto-scrolling, rotation, cycling between layers in Photoshop or another compatible program, and changing the brush size.

The included pen offers just the right amount of weight and balance. Two earlier nits remain: The pen grip attracts a surprising amount of dust particles and lint, and it's too easy to accidentally press the front-mounted DuoSwitch while laying down virtual ink. On the plus side, you still get an eraser, unlike with two of Wacom's latest low-end Bamboo tablets, and the included weighty base is still an ideal place to park the pen when you're not using it.

Installing the included driver CD was painless; all it did was go out to the Web and download the latest drivers anyway. Then I chose the appropriate right-handed orientation and plugged in the included USB cable as directed. The tablet's status LED lit up, and the system finished installing the drivers. From there, the Intuos5 became active; I could control the Windows 7 mouse cursor using the tablet surface as well as my existing mouse.

Bundled Software, ExpressKeys, and Multitouch
Wacom also provides a good amount of bundled software with the Intuos5, though it requires a somewhat clunky login setup and download process on the company's website. Even so, it's worth the (minor) trouble: You get full versions of Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 , Anime Studio Debut 8 , and Autodesk SketchBook Express, plus a copy of Nik Software Color Effects Pro 4 Select Edition and a 90-day trial of Corel Painter 12. All five programs work on both PCs and Macs.

The programmable ExpressKeys on the left are of a new capacitive design. Simply running your finger over them pops up a translucent heads-up display on screen showing what each one does, which is quite slick. When you're writing in Microsoft Word, the Intuos software pops up a small drawing pen icon near the on-screen cursor. Tap it, and it opens up a dialog box showing various handwriting recognition options.

Meanwhile, the new multitouch gestures work much the same way as they did on the lower-end Wacom Bamboo Capture CTH470?($99, 3.5 stars). I had little problem pinch-zooming the view on-screen in both directions, providing I did it fairly deliberately. Rotation gestures also worked well. That said, not all of my gestures registered on the first try; Wacom still has a way to go before it approaches the consistency of a good laptop trackpad, like you'll find on the Apple MacBook Pro.

Settings, Testing, and Advanced Features
A Wacom Tablet Properties icon in the Start menu lets you go deeper into the tablet's settings. Here, you can configure plenty of options for the surface, the grip pen, and for various applications. Of particular note are the Tip Feel and Tilt Sensitivity settings, which let you define with precision exactly how the pen draws, and the Eraser settings, which also have a configurable feel and can be programmed for other tasks instead of erasing. You can also program individual settings on a per-app basis, letting you choose different levels of tip firmness for painting versus photo editing.

Once everything is installed and underway, using the Intuos5 is an absolute pleasure. This is one accurate drawing surface, and by now, Wacom has long since nailed the pen feel and surface texture. The Intuos5 offers 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity, which is the same as before. As with any drawing tablet, if you've never used one before, you'll need to adjust how you position your hand, wrist, and arm so that you don't trigger accidental movements or "ink," and you may want to fiddle with some of the preferences to tune the sensitivity. But once you get the hang of that, it's easy to apply exactly the right amount of pressure, and the tablet picks up even the absolute slightest movements.

In addition, if you use Adobe Photoshop CS5 , Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 , or AutoDesk Maya , among other apps, the Intuos5 lets you take advantage of plenty of advanced features. For example, pen tilt and pressure can control brush opacity and exposure in Photoshop, as well as color and size. Photoshop Quick Masks and Layer Masks also work specifically with Wacom pens, and you can burn, blur, and sharpen as precisely as you need. You don't get the tilt support if you're not using a compatible app, but given the target market for the Intuos5 line, which is usually familiar with at least one of these professional packages, that's not a huge con.

Wireless Kit and Conclusions
Wacom also sent us a Wireless Accessory Kit ($39) to try out. Even if you buy one with the tablet, you still need to set the tablet up over USB first, because the battery isn't charged. Installing the battery underneath the tablet is simple, and it takes about six hours to fully charge. You also get a separate piece that adds a charging LED light and a power button to the Intuos5, in place of a dummy plastic cover that ships with the tablet. Finally, a tiny USB receiver plugs into a free port on your desktop or laptop. Overall, the wireless kit works fine; I'd just rather see all of the Intuos5 tablets be wireless by default, instead of requiring an optional kit that costs extra.

The Intuos5 continues to reign supreme as the ideal midrange drawing tablet for professionals and amateurs alike. Upgrading from an older Intuos model isn't necessary; there's not much here that improves over the prior Intuos4 line , for example, at least in terms of must-have features. But if you don't already have one, or if you're thinking of upgrading from one of Wacom's entry-level tablets like the Bamboo Capture CTH470 , it's a no-brainer. Short of buying one of Wacom's high-end touch screens, which let you draw directly on the screen surface, the Intuos5 strikes an ideal balance of features, accuracy, and price for professionals and amateur enthusiasts alike.

UN's Ban to raise N. Korea launch at Seoul summit

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Thursday he would raise North Korea's planned rocket launch at a Seoul nuclear summit next week, expressing "deep concern" over the issue.

"I am going to discuss the issue with the president of the Republic of (South Korea) in Seoul and I will also engage with other leaders attending the nuclear summit," Ban told a press conference in Malaysia.

The nuclear-armed North has announced it will launch a rocket next month to put a satellite into orbit, a move which the US and its allies see as a pretext for a long-range missile test.

Pyongyang has said any South Korean attempt to address the North's nuclear programme at the March 26-27 Seoul summit would be seen as a declaration of war.

But the programme and the rocket launch were expected to be hot topics on the sidelines of the meeting, which will see US President Barack Obama and other world leaders meet to discuss nuclear security issues.

A UN Security Council resolution passed after the North staged missile and nuclear tests in 2009 bans a ballistic missile launch for any purpose.

"As secretary-general of the United Nations I express my deep concern by the announcement of the (North Korean) government (on) their intention to launch a satellite," Ban said.

Ban, a South Korean, also called the planned launch "a clear violation" of Security Council resolutions and said it "threatens the peace and security on the Korean peninsula".

He said it could also undermine recent positive signs on long-running international efforts to end North Korea's nuclear programme.

Under a deal announced last month but now in jeopardy, Washington would offer substantial food aid for a partial nuclear freeze. It has raised modest hopes of progress in the denuclearisation efforts.

"This (the rocket launch) is again undermining the positive atmosphere which has been established recently between the US and (North Korea)," Ban said.

The North has lambasted next week's meeting -- the South's biggest-ever diplomatic gathering -- as an "unsavoury burlesque" intended to justify an atomic attack by South Korea and its US ally.

In Seoul, South Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-Hwan again appealed to the North to scrap its rocket launch, calling it "a grave provocation".

South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak reportedly said Wednesday that despite Pyongyang's threats, leaders of five nations will discuss ways to press North Korea to abandon its plans to launch the rocket.

The United States, China, South Korea, Japan and Russia have been involved since 2003 in the talks, which have been broken off repeatedly over various instances of North Korean brinksmanship.

North Korea's state news agency said Wednesday any attempt by Lee to raise the issue would be "a ridiculous attempt and an absolutely unpardonable criminal act".

"Any provocative act would be considered as a declaration of war against us and its consequences would serve as great obstacles to talks on the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula," it said.

Cardinals knock off top-seeded Spartans 57-44

PHOENIX (AP) ? Louisville figured its game against Michigan State to be low-scoring, a natural expectation with two of the nation's best defenses butting heads.

The Cardinals had one big advantage: Gorgui Dieng.

Dominating inside, Dieng blocked seven shots and altered several others to anchor a stifling defense that helped Louisville knock off top-seeded Michigan State 57-44 Thursday night in the West Regional semifinals.

"''He was very disruptive," Michigan State's Draymond Green said. "We're not going to back down from anyone. We took it at him. He pulled off some great blocked shots. That's what he does. That's his strength."

The Cardinals (29-9) relied on 3-point shooting in the first half and moved inside in the second to befuddle the Spartans.

Their defense gave Michigan State fits all night.

Instead of trapping like it normally does, Louisville played a bait-and-switch game with the Spartans and Green, their multitalented forward. The idea was to jump out on screens and to make the Spartans work on every possession and, hopefully, wear them out.

It worked, in large part because Dieng was in the back to clean things up.

Tent-pole thin when he arrived at Louisville, the Senegalese center worked hard on his body and his game, developing into the one player the Cardinals had to have on the floor during his sophomore season. When he got in foul trouble, Louisville labored, so one of the key parts of coach Rick Pitino's game plan was to make sure the Cardinals protected him.

They did and he protected the rim in return, getting five of his blocked shots in the second half to prevent Michigan State from mounting any kind of rally. The Cardinals move on to the West final against Marquette or Florida on Saturday.

"When we came here, we know (what) we're going to face," said Dieng, who also had five points, nine rebounds and three steals while matching the school record for blocked shots in an NCAA tournament game. "We knew we were going to come to a war. We need to be tougher than them to win this game."

Michigan State (29-8) started slow and never got going against Louisville's amoebic defense.

The Spartans got shots they wanted and usually make, but couldn't get many to fall against Dieng or anyone else, shooting 28 percent while being outscored 20-14 inside by the leaner Cardinals.

Green had 13 points and 16 rebounds in his final game for Michigan State. Brandon Wood added 14 points for the Spartans, who were outscored 17-4 off the bench.

"They disrupted us a little bit and we didn't have enough guys who could play well," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said.

This sweet matchup of top programs featured two of college basketball's best short-preparation coaches.

Pitino has used his speed-the-opponent-up system to reach the Final Four five times, becoming the first coach to lead three different schools to the national semifinals. Once past the NCAA tournament's first week, he's had a knack for guiding his team further along the bracket, going 10-0 in the regional semifinals.

Izzo has spent his 17 years at Michigan State building teams that can handle the rigors of the Big Ten or switch to greyhound mode when the opponent plays fast. He's been as consistent as any coach in the game, leading the Spartans to the Final Four six times, including the 2000 national title, and 10 trips to the regionals round the past 15 years.

Izzo played the right hand the last time these two basketball brains met, taking the Spartans to the 2009 Final Four after they found a way to break Louisville's pressure.

Pitino had something up his sleeve this time.

With Michigan State bogging the game down, the Cardinals struggled early, missing 12 of their first 13 shots. They snapped out of it by hitting 3s.

Russ Smith hit a pair, Jared Swopshire and Chris Smith each dropped one in and, even Dieng ? 0 for 2 in his career previously ? got one to go in.

Swopshire closed it out with a 3 from the corner to put the Cardinals up 23-18 at halftime. Louisville was 7 of 15 from the arc in the half, but got almost nothing inside, hitting 1 of 15 shots from two-point range.

"Our game plan was to cut off the paint," Izzo said. "I thought we did actually a very good job of that. And yet they hit some 3's."

Louisville shifted gears to open the second half, getting two layups and a dunk to keep its cushion. Swopshire followed with an alley-oop to Siva for the point guard's first points, then stole the inbound pass to set up two free throws by Russ Smith that put the Cardinals up 35-25.

Michigan State managed a short run to get within four, but Louisville used its pressure to get a couple of steals and baskets to go up 43-32. Dieng followed with a couple more swats ? one on Keith Appling that sailed into the stands ? to keep the Spartans at arm's length.

"He played an exceptional game," Pitino said.

Good enough to get Louisville into the regional final for the third time in six years, a trip to New Orleans and the Final Four within its sights.

LeapZone | Branding & Business Ideas for Entrepreneurs ...

Marketing is Not Promotion

1215579_sale[1] I can?t tell you how many potential clients I talk to who want instant pudding. That is to say, they want to get on Facebook and Twitter, and overnight have 10,000 new sales. It just doesn?t work that way.

Look at Groupon. Retailers who use the service are on the fence. After all, yes, they did book 400 appointments for cheap facials, but what next? None of the Groupon users are coming back.

That?s because there?s a fundamental difference between marketing and promotion.

  • Marketing: Ongoing efforts to establish a brand in a given market. It?s about brand recognition and trust.
  • Promotion: A spike in sales, even if it?s at a discount. People flock to save money on a product or service. No guarantee they?ll be back.

And I just realized that businesses don?t get the difference here. They think marketing and promotions are the same. But they simply aren?t. They absolutely, though, can work hand in hand.

How To Market

Build your brand around what you know. Be an advocate and an expert in your industry. Share articles, write articles, tweet and post interesting tips to Facebook. Send emails. Write press releases.

How to Promote

Go where you have followers. Post a Facebook/Twitter/email subscriber only special. Make people feel like they can?t get this exclusive deal anywhere else. Lose money on it.

Leap of the Week:

During the promotion, get email addresses. Add them to your newsletter list. Ask people on Twitter to take a photo of what they bought with the promotion. Follow up to ask if the order was okay. Offer surprise incentives to people who spent X amount of money. Keep up the momentum. Stay in touch with that bargain-shopping customer and get them back.

AUGUSTA, Ga. More than 75 percent of fourth-graders in urban and rural settings have measurable levels of a nicotine breakdown product in their saliva that documents their second-hand smoke exposure, researchers report.

A study of 428 fourth graders and 453 parents in seven rural and seven urban Georgia schools also showed that the urban children were more likely to be smokers 14.9 percent versus 6.6 percent. Additionally urban children have the most exposure to smokers: 79.6 percent versus 75.3 percent, according to findings presented to the 15th World Conference on Tobacco or Health March 20-24 in Singapore.

"It's bad news," said Dr. Martha S. Tingen, Co-Director of Georgia Health Sciences University's Child Health Discovery Institute and Interim Program Leader of the GHSU Cancer Center's Cancer Prevention and Control Program. "Smoking is one of the major causes of low-birth weight infants, it increases the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by 10 times, increases breathing problems, asthma-related hospital admissions, ear and upper-respiratory infections, yet all these kids are living in a smoking environment."

The findings are another reminder to pediatricians to talk with parents and children about smoking habits during every checkup and to researchers that more community-based studies are needed to give parents and children alike the skills they need to avoid or stop smoking, Tingen said. They also indicate that geography and health disparities need to figure heavily into tailoring solutions.

In the study group, researchers found children in the rural areas were more likely to be white and living with both parents; children in urban settings tended to be poorer, live with one parent, receive health care at community health clinics and have a parent who smoked.

At GHSU, young pediatricians such as Dr. Ketarah Robinson learn early to be vigilant and forthright about major health issues such as smoking and obesity with the parents and children they see in clinic, asking tough questions about whether the kids are getting pressured to smoke and if they've already given in. Like the children in the study, some kids say "yes" as early as age 10. Then doctors such as Robinson give them readily discernible reasons not to. "At that age we give them more concrete things like: Do you want to stink and have yellow teeth?" said Robinson, Co-Chief Resident in Pediatrics at GHS Children's Medical Center. Robinson and second-year Medical College of Georgia student Prathyusha Mididoddi will present the rural versus urban findings in Singapore. Tingen, who holds the Charles W. Linder Endowed Chair in Pediatrics, is first author.

Mididoddi echoed the fact that a significant percentage of kids getting regular smoke exposure is both "scary" and preventable. She and Robinson agree the findings re-emphasize the need for thorough social histories to get a clear picture of where and how children live.

"At any age, cigarette smoke really affects kids, whether it's a grandmother they visit with on weekends or a parent they are with every day," Robinson said. Now in her fourth year of training, Robinson already has seen educational efforts help parents stop smoking or at least keep them from smoking around their children. But she's also had a few patients start smoking.

Amazingly, some of those young smokers might already have trouble breathing. In a related study of 2,636 eighth-to-10th graders in four rural Georgia schools, GHSU researchers also found that nearly 40 percent of white females and nearly 27 percent of white boys with wheezing, coughing asthma symptoms said they smoked. There were other unhealthy indicators: children with an actual asthma diagnosis whether or not they had symptoms had a higher percentage of body fat as measured by a higher body mass index.

The study looked at children with no asthma diagnosis, a diagnosis and symptoms, a diagnosis and no symptoms and active symptoms but no actual diagnosis in a 30 day-period. While smoke exposure is bad for anyone, it's at the top of the list of asthma triggers. The asthma study, along with another study yielding encouraging news that home-based intervention can help black parents feel confident about their ability to make their home tobacco-free, are being presented as posters during the tobacco research meeting.

The study compared general health education to parents learning life skills geared at improving communication, emphasizing their strength as role models and fundamentals such as best parenting practices. The study was in a mix of urban and rural parents who were largely black and an average age of 38. Parents who got life skills training significantly increased their self-efficacy.

"It's an expectation that we are not going to smoke and nobody is going to smoke in our house," said Tingen, who has been taking these types of educational programs to schools and communities for years. "It's an expectation that when you grow up, you are not going to smoke." Tingen hopes this type of positive life-skills training will one day be available to children and parents in every school.
